Protest the Use of Whale Oil to Fuel Whaling Ships

Target: Prime Minister of Iceland, Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir

Goal: Denounce the use of endangered fin whale oil to fuel whaling ships

Kristjan Loftsson, the chief executive at the Icelandic whaling company Hvalur, has been fueling his whaling vessels with the oil from the very whales he kills. Loftsson calls his mixture of fin whale oil and marine oil a “green biofuel,” and claims that it is a more environmentally-friendly fuel. However, there’s nothing environmentally sound about using the oil of an endangered species.

The International Whaling Commission issued a moratorium on the hunting of fin whales, but Iceland has ignored the ban, taking in 148 whales in 2010 before stalling the practice for the next two years. There are only 110,000 fin whales left worldwide, and using their oil as fuel will only drive down their numbers further. Each one of Loftsson’s ships uses the oil equivalent of one fin whale for every day trip it makes, making this obscene fuel source even more unsustainable.

The international ban on whaling has severely crippled the industry; the use of whale oil is just an attempt to help increase net profits. It’s much cheaper to just use a product that you procure yourself than it is to pay for gasoline. This is barbaric practice being put into use in a cruel, dying industry, and it must be stopped.

Dear Prime Minister Sigurðardóttir,

The actions of the Icelandic whaling company Hvalur harm the entire global community. By using whale oil to fuel whaling ships, Hvalur is putting the already endangered fin whales at an even greater risk for extinction. There are many available fuel options for ships, and any of them would be better than this.

The recent outcry over Hvalur’s actions should demonstrate how disgusting this practice is to people all over the world. It is barbaric, inhumane, and insulting to the endangered animals who require our protection.

I urge you to take actions against this company to stop this disgusting practice. The whales deserve to be preserved for future generations, and their chances of survival will only increase if this obscene practice is halted.

  1. Really awful, a double insult and act of cruelty and disrespect to do this to these magnificent creatures.
