Stop Playing Tug-of-War With Embattled Consumers

Target: Baron Frost, Minister of State at the UK Cabinet Office

Goal: Negotiate trade deal that benefits Northern Ireland’s consumers.

Since its tumultuous inception a century ago, Northern Ireland’s place in the United Kingdom (UK) has been fraught with tension. The region has never truly settled on an identity as a country, a territory, or a province. It shares tenuous relationships, both cultural and political, with Ireland and the UK. Sectarian disputes over the years have resulted in bouts of violence and uncertainty. The North Ireland Protocol is the latest controversial measure that threatens to fray relations between Northern Ireland and the UK.

This protocol emerged in the wake of Britain’s exit from the European Union, and it imposed checks on trade between Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK. Specifically, goods transported across the Irish Sea would be subject to increased trade protocols. Both the European Union and the Prime Minister of the UK have threatened to derail the protocol, which would in turn threaten trade relationships with these entities. As the power plays continue, consumers in Northern Ireland are poised to suffer most. If either the EU or the UK suspend trade, affected goods (including potentially essential goods) would not be available to Northern Irelanders.

Sign the petition below to demand the chief negotiator in this tangled trade mess craft a policy that safeguards Northern Ireland’s consumers.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Lord Frost,

Negotiations around the North Ireland Protocol seems to be looking out for everyone’s interests but those of Northern Ireland itself. Many citizens within the region already are grappling with their identity and place in the United Kingdom. Many more feel neglected and shunned by UK leaders who place overwhelming priority on the goals and future of England.

Please stop with the threats and the hostilities on all sides and negotiate in good faith. Most importantly, craft a plan with broad input from the populations most impacted and with a centralized aim to answer the needs of Northern Ireland and its people.

Sincerely,
