Prevent Congress From Cutting Thousands of Jobs in Massachusetts

Target: President Barack Obama

Goal: Limit the federal spending cuts that are rumored to be taking place that will greatly reduce the number of jobs in the state of Massachusetts.

Congress is soon set to enact a series of spending cuts. The cuts were initially planned to take place in January, but were prevented from occurring due to a last-second deal made on New Year’s Eve. Now the nation has to hope for another miracle last-minute deal, specifically with regard to the state of Massachusetts. The cutting process, known as “sequestration,” is set to begin on March 1, 2013, and unless a new deal comes into place before then the state of Massachusetts will lose an estimated 60,000 jobs and $127 million that would have gone toward federal research funding. It is urgent for Congress to find a way to prevent these spending cuts.

President Obama has offered the possibility of a smaller deal that would prevent the sequestration from taking place. Representative Edward Markey has suggested the idea of “targeted” spending cuts directed at defense spending and nuclear weapons (as opposed to the undiscriminating, across-the-board cuts that are currently being plan) to limit the job losses. No matter what, somebody has to come up with a new plan, because as the President has noted, sequestration would be devastating to America’s current economic relief efforts.

Particularly valuable Massachusetts institutions that would be significantly harmed by the cuts include the Small Business Innovation Research Program (estimated to lose 26 projects and $7 million) and Head Start (estimated to lose $6.3 million that would have gone toward providing low-income children with education). Urge President Obama not to move forward with these devastating cuts.

Dear President Obama,

Sequestration is scheduled to begin in just a couple short weeks. Thousands of jobs and millions of dollars will be lost, all of which could have been used to improve the lives of American citizens and the status of America in general. You must do everything in your power to avoid having these cuts be enacted.

One major area that sequestration would hit hardest is the youth of your country. Head Start will be negatively affected by the cuts, as will other educational facilities providing educational opportunities to low-income families and students with disabilities. For the sake of these people alone, you cannot let the cuts take place.

But the youth population is just one segment that will be drastically harmed by these cuts. Low-income seniors will also be negatively affected, as will research facility workers that depend on federal aid.

In short, many lives will be changed for the worse if this budget plan is implemented. You must do everything you can to avoid having sequestration take place. Find a way to create a new deal before the deadline that limits or prevents the amount of damage that is done. Our nation can’t afford a hit like this, not during this period of gradual economic recovery. Do what you can to ensure that the economic recovery continues.

  1. The sequester has begun, but it can still be stopped with any agreement made between both sides. The two sides need to work together to come to said agreement, and soon.
