Don’t Derail Essential Investigation Into Insurrection

Target: Kevin McCarthy, U.S. House Minority Leader

Goal: Allow Republican participation in investigations surrounding the January 6 Capitol riot.

House and Senate Republicans recently blocked a bipartisan investigation into the January 6 attack at the Capitol…an attack that put them in harm’s way. Now, they have gone even further with their seeming attempts at a cover-up. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy announced that any Republican who dared participate on a planned House Select Committee investigating the insurrection would face blowback, including the loss of committee assignments.

This dictate is puzzling and suspect for several reasons. For one, Representative McCarthy and his colleagues were direct witnesses to the events, as they huddled together in likely fear for their lives when rioters stormed the Capitol. These individuals who swore an oath should want answers about an insurrection at their workplace and should want to take every measure to prevent such a security breach from ever occurring again. If some of these politicians really do believe that other factors or other people were responsible, should they not want representation on the panels responsible for investigation so they can “get to the truth?” The complaints about a partisan investigation will inevitably be forthcoming, but McCarthy and his allies are the sole reason why this scenario is happening.

The country’s leaders should not be punished for wanting to participate in an effort to clarify and shed light on what happened to them and to America’s democracy. Sign the petition below to demand this cowardly so-called leader stop worrying about his political image and start fighting for the future of the country he vowed to protect.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Representative McCarthy,

Representative, why is the party that loudly rails against “cancel culture” once again trying to neutralize and ostracize members of its own ranks who dare to exercise an independent thought or action? Why are politicians who raise their voices in support of law enforcement spinning one of the worst and most deadly attacks on police in this country’s history?  More curiously, why is the man who allegedly called the president begging for help on January 6 now trying to sweep the tragic events of that day under the rug? You know that just as on September 11, 2001, a heinous assault on democracy occurred. And you know that just as with that horrific event, an official record is essential for history and for the nation’s future safety.

Members of Congress during that tumultuous time managed to put their political motivations and squabbles aside and unite for a bipartisan independent commission because they knew it was in the best interest of the country, even if it did not serve their own interests. Your colleagues and yourself have already exhibited you cannot do the same by voting down such a commission for an investigation into January 6. Now, you have decided to take this anti-American blockade a step further by threatening any of your colleagues who even think of participating in a House-led investigation.

Why are you so afraid, and why are you engaging in a fight not for but against the truth? Your first allegiance is to the people of the United States, not to your reelection prospects. Please start acting like a leader, and stop the obstruction before you do irreparable damage to America’s legacy.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]

  1. The people involved in this violent insurrection need to be found, tried and prosecuted. People were seriously injured, some even killed, due to this farce. Investigate NOW! Do it, so that in the future, people will think twice about being idiots!

  2. This traitor and pos will do NOTHING.
