Don’t Kill Thousands of Injured Grey Squirrels

Target: George Eustice, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs

Goal: Allow grey squirrels to be released back into the wild.

Wildlife rehabilitation centers across the United Kingdom receive numerous calls each year to aide grey squirrels. However, a new policy has determined that this invading species is no longer allowed to be released back into the wild once they have been properly rehabilitated. This comes as a death sentence to most grey squirrels in the country. While the new laws allow the centers to keep the animals until they die from natural causes, most centers do not have the necessary facilities to permanently keep that many. This will result in injured squirrels being left in the wild to die a horrible death or being taken in where care workers will be forced to euthanize them.

This cruel ruling must be overturned. It is not the animals’ fault that they ended up as an alien in a strange country, and they should not be punished and killed for humankind’s error. Sign this petition to urge the British government to allow the proper rehabilitation of all animals within its borders.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Honourable Eustice,

I understand that grey squirrels are not a native species to your country. However, this does not give your government the right to sign their death warrant. These animals were brought over in the past by human error, and it is not the fault of the current squirrels where they live. Your recent ruling that these animals cannot be re-released into the wild following rehabilitation will force many wildlife care centers to unnecessarily euthanize the grey squirrels that come through their doors.

I urge you to reconsider this ruling and find other means of controlling the population of this foreign species.

Sincerely,

  1. To George Eustice, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. Your policy says the grey squirrel is no longer allowed to be released back into the wild once they have been properly rehabilitated. It’s not the squirrels fault they are blamed, punished or killed for human’s error. I strongly urge the British government to allow the proper rehabiliation of all animas within its borders. Please reconsider this ruling and finds ways of controlling the population of this foreign species.

  2. If these vile, deranged, animal hating cretins kill these poor defenceless squirrels, then they WILL pay bigtime!! Oh yes, an eye for an eye!!!!

  3. Barbara Garrison says:

It’s amazing how little government cares about animals. To them, they are expendable, like trash. One day, they will pay dearly for their attitude.

  4. Maria Bertrand says:

Why is the only option a death sentence! It is again human error and animals always are blamed and pay the price of death!!.

You have to look at other options….can you not release in various different areas across the country. Responsible animal shelters from different parts of your country can be mobilized to transport them. IT IS YOUR ERROR!!! The Lord placed these little squirrels on our earth for a purpose. The option you are proposing will obliterate them! Your will eventually pay a price for this extremely inhumane decision!!!

  5. DON’T KILL THESE AMAZING ANIMALS!! THIS IS STUPID AND INHUMANE!! LET THEM BE RELEASED BACK TO THE WILD!! THE ONES WHO NEED TO BE WIPED OUT ARE STUPID ANIMAL ABUSERS AND KILLERS!!

  6. Agree all comments don’t be cruel and have a heart.
    Stop this now.

  7. Birth control over euthenisation.

  8. Rose Coffey says:

The killing of these animals is unnecessary. It is through no fault of their own that they are in a different country. Why does killing and eliminating a species of animal our solution to every problem that comes up related to that animal? How strange that we have learned nothing through all of the years that have passed.

  9. I thought I was reading another horror story in the USA, total shock it is in the UK. Try being GREAT Britain and not as ignorant as other countries with their non existent animal welfare, we are bad enough as it is.

  10. I can’t tell you how much I hate humans! Starting with the assholes who took America away from Native tribes, and killed them. Greedy selfish power hungry white people won’t rest until the whole planet and every living thing on it, is destroyed. If only there was instant karma!

  11. Seriously?? Gray squirrels will be eradicated in the United Kingdom because they are not a “native species” ??? They have surely been there long enough — well over a 100 yrs– by now to be a part of the eco-system. And they are by now a reliable prey animal for larger meat-eating species. We are a global community & things/animals have moved from original areas. Time would be better spent getting rid of non-native insect & disease pests that threaten people & plant life–I vote we start with stink-bugs

  12. Bernier Angela says:

Fact: Grey squirrels are eradicating native red squirrels. Is that okay?

  13. What kind of monsters are these people???? Don’t kill animals. Be kind. Is that really that difficult?? I am so disappointed by humans and their choices these days.

  14. fact: red squirrels were previously considered vermin and became extinct through persecution. Some were then imported and re-introduced. Various Wildlife Trusts are now encouraging the killing of greys & with the help of the BASC who provide equipment, will teach how to kill these poor creatures – trap, get into hessian bag then bash to death with a heavy stick. Nice eh?

  15. STOP KLING ALL GRAY SQUIRRELS INJURED OR NOT IMMEDIATELY!!!!! There are STUPIDCAND CRUEL PEOPLE EVERYWHERE EVEN WHOM WORK FOR GOVERNMENT! UDEA: START KILLING ALL THESE STUPID AND CRUEL PEOPLE EVERYWHERE!!!!!

  16. It is HUMANS who brought grey squirrels to Britain. (Same as humans bringing rabbits to Australia). WHY do the descendants of those squirrels have to suffer? They have done nothing wrong. Again, it is HUMANS who are to blame for this! Since it is humans who are to blame for all these instances should we now eradicate humans??

  17. Nadine brundage says:

    So heartless and cruel.

  18. Why not spay and neuter them before letting the go back to the wild???? It seems like a simple solution.

  19. American Girl says:

I’d Love to help humanity, it’s just the humans I can’t stand!

Funny how our species can sit there ane say kill that species, euthanize that one, etc etc but does nothing about its own overpopulated garbage!
