Target: Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea, Peter O’Neill
Goal: To save the Matchie’s tree kangaroo from extinction
The Matchie’s tree kangaroo is a native to mountainous rainforests of north eastern New Guinea. Although they are listed as endangered, the species is still facing extinction because of habitat destruction, oil drilling, hunting and rainforest destruction. We must act to preserve the species before it’s too late.
These tree kangaroos are very slow when it comes to reproduction, which makes preserving their species even harder. Unfortunately, many local communities hunt the animals for their meat and fur, which is causing their population to dwindle. Educating the local natives about the threats that these animals face and how close they are to extinction could help to preserve them. The tree kangaroos need extra protection to ensure they aren’t killed off for any reason. There is plenty that the community can do to help.
This unique creature deserves to be protected, especially since humans are the reason for their endangerment. A loss of habitat is not something that any species should have to deal with. We need to fight to protect this animal and to educate the locals about their vulnerability. Sign the petition below to ask Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea, Peter O’Neill, to create more protection for the tree kangaroo.
Dear Prime Minister Peter O’Neill,
Your beautiful country is home to many unique plants, animals, and rain forests Unfortunately, as technology advances and the population increases, we often see the loss of habitats and the endangerment of species. The Matchie’s tree kangaroo is facing many threats because of these precise concerns.
The tree kangaroo is a native to your country and a beautiful, unique species. They depend on the mountainous rain forests that are unfortunately being destroyed. Oil drilling is also causing destruction to their environment. They also face the increased threat of being hunted by locals and used for their meat and fur. These are all situations that humans can control to make sure the tree kangaroo population doesn’t decrease any more. The species should be protected in sanctuaries or parks to ensure prolonged survival.
We are asking you to please do all that you can to protect the beautiful tree kangaroo. Their entire existence depends on people in the area being educated about their endangerment. If your locals knew the importance of this species and how threatened they currently are, then maybe they would stop hunting them and destroying their habitat.
