Clean Up Huge Boat Graveyards Poisoning the Environment

Target: Rick Layzell, Boating Ontario Association, CEO

Goal: Clean up abandoned boats that are contaminating the environment.

Across Canada, hundreds of boats have been abandoned by their owners and contaminate the environment. Not only are the vessels themselves a blight on the natural world, but they leak hazardous substances such as gasoline or oil which poison the land and water.

In Ontario alone, over 450 boats are known to have been deserted at marinas and registered areas, and there is an unknown number left to rot on private lands. Other provinces in the country have delegated provincial funding to clean up boats that cause similar problems in their jurisdictions, and it is time Ontario did the same.

Sign this petition to urge the Ontario government and the boating industry to clean up abandoned and derelict boats that litter the province.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Layzell,

As the CEO of the Boating Ontario Association, you deal with both individuals and the government to ensure that recreational boating does not harm the environment. One significant environmental threat that is posed by boating is the abandonment of derelict boats across the province. The shocking number of boat graveyards that litter your province has recently come to light, and I urge you to work with local government officials to begin cleaning up these potential sources of contamination.

I urge you to encourage your members to properly dispose of their old vessels, and to work with the government to clean up all abandoned boats in Ontario.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
