Don’t Put Cruise Passengers and Other Consumers at Risk of COVID-19

Target: Ron DeSantis, Governor of Florida

Goal: Stop prohibiting cruise lines and other businesses from keeping consumers safe from COVID-19.

Politicians who anoint themselves champions of business freedom and limited government continue to pass hypocritical laws that undermine these very values. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is a particularly frequent offender. Now, his latest attempt to interfere in decisions made by business leaders may put the health of thousands of consumers in harm’s way.

The controversy surrounds so-called vaccine passports: documentation showing that a person has been fully vaccinated against COVID-19. The governor has banned businesses from mandating these documents and has recently threatened action against cruise lines operating in Florida that plan to demand proof of vaccination from passengers. This dictate puts the cruise industry in an untenable position because the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)—the leading authority on infectious diseases—advised that cruises would only be safe if all people on board were vaccinated. Cruise ships, which keep very large groups of people in close quarters for an extended period of time, were among the first serious outbreaks in the early days of the pandemic.

Governor DeSantis’ politically motivated war on this issue threatens to hobble an industry already suffering massively from an extended hiatus. Some cruise lines are even considering moving out of Florida in order to restart their businesses safely and protect consumers. This industry is far from the only entity impacted though, as the law prohibits any business from asking about a person’s vaccination status. Will the governor next target general vaccination mandates set by schools that safeguard vulnerable youth?

Public health, consumer protection, and entrepreneurial rights are at stake. Sign the petition below to demand this selfish governor start looking out for the interest of Florida rather than his own political interests.

Dear Governor DeSantis,

Would you push a stake through the heart of one of Florida’s main economic drivers? Would you put populations of people equivalent to a small city at risk for serious illness or death? Would you cast away your outraged protests against government overreach and violations of business liberties for some cheap political points?

Governor, you have answered all of these question with an affirmation “yes” through your signing of the bill banning businesses from even inquiring about vaccination status. These leaders have every right to ensure a safe environment for their employees and for customers. Cruise lines in particular would be taking a responsible step with vaccine passports.

Customers in all sectors of business must abide by certain rules and guidelines daily. We as a society accept other broad public health and safety actions, from seatbelts to mandatory school vaccinations. Do not go down in history alongside the Anti-Mask League that had its hand in prolonging the pain and suffering of the 1918 flu pandemic. Stop politicizing this equally crushing pandemic.

Rescind the anti-business, anti-consumer, and anti-health attack on vaccines immediately.

The only answer to this extreme problem is .. until we are all vaccinated, no one is vaccinated!
No one is free of Covid until we are all free of Covid!
