Goal: Stop 25,000 barrels in undersea dumpsite from leaking toxic chemicals into the ocean.
A piece of ocean off the coast of California has been a known dumping ground for toxic chemicals since the 1930s. Even though dumping there was banned in 1972, over 36,000 acres of the seafloor are littered with barrels of toxic waste that are slowly leaching into the ground and water. In total, more than 25,000 barrels have been located.
Among other things, many of the barrels contain the deadly chemical DDT. DDT has long been found in fish and other animals, such as dolphins, in the area and can cause devastating multi-generational effects on wildlife. Any barrels that are still intact must be moved to a safe disposal site. Any that have leaked must be assessed for their environmental impact.
Sign this petition to urge the government to begin immediate cleanup of this area that has been poisoning animals, the environment, and people for nearly 100 years.

Dear Mr. Regan,
For nearly 100 years, toxic barrels have been leaching dangerous substances into the waters off the coast of California. Over 25,000 barrels have been located over 36,000 acres of the seafloor, which have been poisoning the environment and aquatic animals since the 1930s. While dumping in this location stopped in 1972, the effects of the chemicals, including the devastating toxin DDT, are still being felt.
I urge the EPA to intercede on behalf of the people and animals who live in this contaminated environment and begin a cleanup process without delay. While incalculable damage has already been done, we have the chance to remove these ticking time bombs from the waters and help future generations who will inhabit the area.

I am surprise, shocked, and disappointed that California would allow this leakage to continue for such a length of time. We are facing climate change yet people and agencies don’t seem to understand the gravity of the situation. Killing fish and watching as DDT and other chemicals seep into the water is outrageous. People are paid to do a job and yet this happens? There is no excuse for this and accountability needs to be taken as there are those responsible for this problem. It is no accident nor surprise as this has been leaking for a very long time. Clean up is vital. Do it now.

-NO WONDER THE EARTH IS ANSWERING BACK CALIFORNIA WITH ALL KINDS OF DEVASTATION.
The youngest barrel in the channel is 50 years old, and I don’t remember ever seeing a plastic barrel back in those days. The petition is asking that barrels that are still intact be removed, which, let me do the math here: – metal barrels + salt water + 50 years = ZERO INTACT BARRELS.
Wouldn’t the petition be better targeted toward 1) The oil and chemical companies responsible, 2) The companies who took over those companies and then changed the name to dodge culpability, 3) The billionaire executives of the companies, and 4) The doughy, pampered, coddled heirs, of said billionaire executives, in the case of their departure to a well-deserved eternity in Hell?
How do you know this about the barrels?
Everyone pays when unethical companies just feel free to dump their toxic waste wherever they want. It’s happening all over this country and nothing is done about it. If their goal is to destroy the earth and oceans, they’re doing a great job.

I have lived in California my whole life and I am in uter discussed to hear and read about this still happening!!! It is time to put a STOP to this NOW!!! California, we need to fix this and save our from the horrific damage we have caused! Do it environment now before everything is dead and gone!!!
