Goal: Stop lottery to hunt Grand Canyon bison.
The National Parks Service (NPS) recently held a lottery that allowed anyone to enter for the chance to hunt bison in the Grand Canyon. More than 45,000 people entered the lottery, which is part of an initiative to limit the population of bison, whose growing numbers are negatively impacting resources in the Grand Canyon area. The NPS will ultimately only select twelve skilled shooters.
While the NPS has defended their decision for the cull, stating that a fast growing bison population has been ravaging water, vegetation, soils, and archaeological sites within the national park, the excitement around the opportunity to hunt this majestic animal is concerning. Hunting at national parks is forbidden, but the NPS does have the jurisdiction to allow park staff or volunteers to kill animals that are damaging the natural spaces. This normalization and “viral” attention that the search for bison-hunting volunteers has drawn could potentially lead to unauthorized hunting or attack on wild animals.

The publication of the culling of bison in the Grand Canyon and the ability for anyone to simply enter a lottery to hunt these animals sends the wrong message to the public. The NPS should be focused on conservation and respect for nature. This lottery has, instead, created “viral” excitement around the possibility of shooting a majestic animal that is native to the United States. The fact that 45,000 people registered for a lottery reveals a strange and gruesome desire of many individuals to kill wild animals.
I urge you to stop the lottery to hunt Grand Canyon bison and leave conservation efforts of all kinds to NPS staff.

The National Park Service is made up of those the American public pay to tend the parks. People want to come to a park to be with nature, hear the birds, see the animals, and relax. Now, as if this country needed more problems, we have a lottery to kill. Hunters are merciless and shoot anything which moves or stands still. Maybe if a person is shot by accident the park service will wake up and stop the murder. Should this happen it will be the fault of the park service. Once the door to death is opened it can’t be shut. Our parks will not be worth the money it takes to pay your salaries. Can the bison be moved? Will other animals be protected. How?Has the park service done anything to assure the public? Lies won’t work. Excuses are not worth anything and reasons may be able codetermine if this tragic idea is worth the condemnation and aftermath. Hunters with guns is a murder waiting to happen. I don’t agree with the Elk cull and I certainly don’t agree with this. Please rethink this idea before you open the portal to Hell.
Why has a hunt been proposed before offering to relocate the bison to areas where they might want to have them to re-establish bison in their former range/homes? This is just a sick way to address a problem that is a result of mismanagement by the park service. And all those hunters who can’t wait to kill an animal for just being an animal? Can’t even print what I think of them.
Well, the mindset that almost wiped out the bison is at play here. If they left the predators alone and not murdered them, the population would be stable. If it grows then so what. There used to be millions of bison before the white man came and wiped them out.
Actually some of those 45,000 people in the lottery are hoping to get picked and then they don’t shoot the bison.
The worse thing is they do no genetic testing and could actually destroy the bison’s future breeding. Hunts like this weaken the gene pool. The parks dept did this to the wild horses too.
Killing is a game only to sick minds. At least, as Ms. Carolyn Douglas suggests, let them kill each other; not helpless Bison that we, we!!! killed almost off once. Then brought them back from the verge of extinction … only to do it all over again. Miscreants!

Catalina Island has been working, for years, to control their Bison population through birth control. They were moved there by a movie company, and then left behind once they were done, leaving the conservancy the responsibility of care and breeding control. Their hard work has paid off. These Bison were carelessly moved out of their environment in Nebraska and were unable to be moved back because they had acclimated to California Temps and were unable to handle the extreme cold.

How typical of humans…the first thought is to start killing innocent animals in THEIR OWN HOME…rather than relocating some of them or sterilizing some.
