Target: United States Congress
Goal: Come up with a plan to stop gun violence and prevent tragedies before they happen.
Twenty innocent children and six women who had devoted their lives to helping children achieve their dreams were shot dead in Newtown, Connecticut, by a lunatic holding an assault rifle. This was not the first time something like this had happened. Senseless gun violence resulting in tragedy that victimizes innocent people – it’s not something new. But this is a wake-up call. It’s time to solve the gun violence dilemma for real, and Congress needs to take action.
Every citizen has the right to bear arms, and they should feel free to do so. However, a gun is a dangerous weapon, and it is critical that it is used responsibly. It may be one’s right to own a gun, but it is no one’s right to recklessly endanger others. If someone proves to be incapable of handling a gun responsibly, then it is the responsibility of the United States government to prohibit them from operating such a dangerous weapon. Those who wish to purchase a gun must undergo a mental screening. We have seen what a gun can do – it’s ugly. Many of these criminals are mentally ill or highly unstable. A simple mental health screening could have prevented these tragedies. If you refuse to be tested, knowing that this practice can save innocent children like the ones at Sandy Hook Elementary School, then you may need to step back and reevaluate your priorities.
Background checks and mental health tests could save lives. Congress must act as soon as possible to enforce these regulations in gun sales. We don’t have to compromise our right to bear arms to protect innocent people from senseless gun violence. Sign this petition and urge Congress to take action now.
Dear United States Congress,
Twenty innocent children and six women who had devoted their lives to helping children achieve their dreams were shot dead in Newtown, Connecticut, by a lunatic holding an assault rifle. Senseless gun violence resulting in tragedy that victimizes innocent people is not something new. But this is a wake-up call. It is time to solve the gun violence dilemma permanently, and it is up to you, the United States Congress, to take action.
Background checks and mental health screenings could prevent some seriously dangerous people from gaining access to fatal assault weapons. These simple procedures are a critical step in ending gun violence and preventing tragedies that need not happen. Please enact legislation that requires potential purchasers to pass a background check and mental health screening. As you have seen, insanity and mental instability have been leading causes in some of the most traumatic acts of gun violence. These are changes that must be made. Each day that you do not act, more people die from gun violence that could be prevented.
I urge you to require all people wishing to purchase weapons to pass background checks and undergo mental health screenings.
