Goal: Rescind medals of honor awarded to US soldiers who participated in the Wounded Knee Massacre.
The Wounded Knee Massacre was a 1890 slaughter of Lakota men, women, and children by US military forces. Twenty Medals of Honor were awarded to US soldiers who participated in the massacre. The South Dakota Senate is now looking into having those medals rescinded.
Senate Minority Leader Troy Heinert, a Democrat and an enrolled member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe, said: “This has never been talked about in this statehouse. I can still feel the pain, If I close my eyes tight, I can see what the pictures have shown us: frozen bodies being thrown into a mass grave.” The Wounded Knee Massacre is estimated to have resulted in 300 deaths of members of Chief Big Foot’s band.

While it may be true that everyone makes mistakes, character is revealed in how those mistakes are dealt with in the aftermath. The United States government is responsible for committing many mistakes, particularly against Native Americans. The Wounded Knee Massacre was not a battle; it was a senseless killing of over 300 men, women, and children. The dead were then piled into mass graves. The Medals of Honor that were awarded to US soldiers who participated in this massacre must be rescinded so that trust can begin to be rebuilt between the American government and Native peoples.
