Applaud Police Department that Fired Officer Who Supported Kyle Rittenhouse

Target: Larry D. Boone, Norfolk Chief of Police

Goal: Applaud police chief for firing officer who donated money to and applauded Kyle Rittenhouse.

Lt. William Kelly was fired from the Norfolk Police Department after donating money to support homicide suspect Kyle Rittenhouse. Kelly worked in internal affairs and was terminated after a data breach revealed that he made a $25 donation to a Kyle Rittenhouse defense fund. A message included with the donation read: “God bless. Thank you for your courage. Keep your head up. You’ve done nothing wrong.” Rittenhouse is charged with shooting two men during protests against the police in Kenosha, Wisconsin following the shooting of Jacob Blake.

Chip Filer, the city manager of Norfolk released a statement about the decision to fire Kelly, saying: “Chief Larry Boone and I have concluded Lt. Kelly’s actions are in violation of City and departmental policies. His egregious comments erode the trust between the Norfolk Police Department and those they are sworn to serve. The City of Norfolk has a standard of behavior for all employees, and we will hold staff accountable.”
