Protect Migrant Farmworkers During the Covid Pandemic

Target: Mary Robinson, Canadian Federation of Agriculture President

Goal: Protect migrant farmworkers during the pandemic.

Migrant workers are the backbone of many Canadian farm operations and many of them are threatened by unfit living and working conditions during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Each year, 60,000 migrant workers come to Canada annually to grow and harvest the nation’s food. During the current health crisis, these workers are particularly threatened. Many of them work and are housed in crowded environments exposing them to unnecessary virus transmission. They are also inhibited by their language barrier, as they may be unaware of current threats or safety measures. To make matters worse, their precarious immigration status caused by the pandemic makes it difficult, if not impossible for them to speak out about their unsafe conditions.

Sign this petition to ensure that all workers in Canada, whether foreign or domestic, are given the protection and safe treatment they deserve.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Currie,

The plight of migrant farmworkers in Canada is unsettling. Reports and interviews have surfaced showing that unfit working and living conditions unnecessarily expose these farmhands to Covid-19. I think your organization’s flippant and nonchalant attitude towards their plight is inappropriate, and more needs to be done to ensure employers are properly protecting their workers.

Since these workers are migrants, their visa status is unpredictable in the current times. This makes them especially nervous about speaking out against unfit conditions. You need to take matters into your own hands and ensure these workers who are vital to the food production of the nation are given the same protection from the pandemic as domestic workers.

Sincerely,
