The United Nations’ 2020 State of the Global Climate report confirmed some alarming findings. Despite a global pandemic slowing human activity, carbon emissions ultimately soared. Sea level rises and ocean acidification continued. The Arctic saw its hottest temperature ever recorded, in line with the rest of the planet experiencing one of the hottest years in history. As the UN Secretary-General warned, the world is “on the edge of the abyss,” and 2021 must be the year of urgent course-correction.
On Earth Day, the United States will convene the Leaders Summit on Climate: a virtual gathering hosting dozens of the world’s most influential—and most polluting—countries. This massive effort represents a crucial opportunity to solidify climate change’s prominent place on the global agenda. Both US and Chinese leaders (representatives of the two biggest polluters on Earth) have agreed to work together on this vital issue. A concrete, clear plan will show leadership, and such a plan should be reinforced by an international emergency declaration on climate change.

The United Nations’ State of the Global Climate report –and the disturbing warnings that accompanied it—should cement the resolve of every nation to make the Leaders Summit on Climate a success. Recommitting countries to the goals set forth by the Paris Climate Accord is vital, as are the expected plans to unveil a comprehensive green policy. This dedication must come from example and inspiration.
When regions face a collective crisis, we demonstrate that we take the threat seriously by declaring a state of emergency. The world is currently in one state of emergency now due to the pandemic, but this other, equally threatening epidemic must be treated with the same gravity. Please set the right foundation for this crucial meeting by formally declaring climate change a global emergency.
