Seek Maximum Sentence for Derek Chauvin’s Murder of George Floyd

Target: Peter Cahill, Hennepin County District Judge

Goal: Seek the maximum sentencing for Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd.

A jury recently found Derek Chauvin guilty of all three charges he was facing for the murder of George Floyd. The trial has been closely watched by the public and the death of Floyd set off a national reckoning with police brutality and violence and its overlap with systemic racism. Chauvin is guilty of unintentional second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter. He left the courtroom in handcuffs.

Minnesota state guidelines recommend 12.5 years in prison for unintentional second-degree murder for someone without any previous criminal history. If prosecutors take into consideration other aggravating factors, they could seek a sentence up to the maximum of 40 years. Sign this petition to urge the prosecutors to seek maximum sentencing for Derek Chauvin.

PETITION LETTER:

To The Honorable Judge Cahill,

A nation watched as Derek Chauvin murdered George Floyd. Chauvin followed through with the killing despite Floyd begging for his life and calling out for his mother. Chauvin followed through with the killing despite bystanders urging him to stop and pointing out the obvious: Floyd was dying.

It is a rare case when police officers are held accountable for their actions in a courtroom and found guilty. The conviction of Derek Chauvin sets a precedent for all police officers serving our nation right now. Police officers must know that their actions have consequences and that they are being held to a standard of service that incorporates racial equality. I urge you to seek the maximum sentencing for Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd.

Sincerely,

  1. He should be punished to the fullest, if it wasn’t for this man George Floyd would most likely be alive today. He died a horrible death begging for his life. He did not deserve to die but Derek Chauvin does deserve the most punishment he could get!
