Goal: Protect giraffes from grisly slaughter.
In Africa, about three hundred giraffes are slaughtered every year, but the actual number might be much higher. Since the 1980s, the giraffe population decreased from over 155,000 animals to only 111,000. Today, giraffes are listed as a vulnerable species, with trophy hunting playing a major role in the decline.
Although giraffes are threatened by extinction, people continue to hunt and kill them for pleasure. Hunters claim to keep the environment in balance by killing countless animals, never acknowledging that humans should not interfere with nature. Furthermore, most hunters target the strongest animals of a species, with devastating effects on their gene pool.
Not only are these precious animals viciously killed for trophies, but many of them are also killed for the fashion industry to create products like boots, pillows, jackets, and book covers.
Trophy hunting is a vile sport, for which countless animals have to give their lives. Sign this petition to banish hunting giraffes.

Dear Barbara Creecy,
As the Minister of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment of South Africa, you must protect vulnerable animal species in your country. Many people travel to Africa for only one reason: to hunt animals. Especially rare species are popular to fulfill a hunter’s need for glory.
Animals that are killed during the hunt puts the population of the species in danger. Unless more efforts are made to protect them, the number of giraffes will continue to decline even further towards extinction.
You must utilize the power that your position has granted you to preserve vulnerable species on our planet. Please implement protections for giraffes, and ban giraffe hunting altogether.

There are no adequate words to describe the loathing I have for these cowardly “trophy hunters”. I wish the world would make it where anyone hunting these endangered species is at their own risk because there is no guarantee for the “trophy hunter’s” safety – if someone beats them up or whatever, oh well.

I am so sad. I was upset about the Zimbabwe announcement over their decision to allow elephants to be hunted by trophy hunters for …MONEY! The government decided they wanted the money more than the lives of wild elephants. And here we have yet another animal sacrificed for money. The giraffe. I have lived many years yet this seems, to me, as if the world has lost its mind along with the magnificent animals that make up the world. I now see a world of robots and rockets to outer space but no beauty of birds and their sweet songs or wildlife, of land still sacred and untouched whispering the call of nature to the spirit found in the deepest longings of humanity. Indeed, how sad.

as the Minister of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment of South Africa, to protect and prevent the slaughter of Giraffes. Killing these beautiful animals for sport or trophy hunting must end. People around the World now know that Giraffes are being slaughtered in your Country and you are the one in a position to allow it or to protect these animals from being killed.
WHEN THESE AND OTHER WILDLIFE ARE GONE THEN YOUR COUNTRY’S ECONOMY GOES AWAY AS WELL. STOP THE KILLINGS!!!
Taking a life just for something to hang on your wall is despicable! All animals are much more beautiful alive – they have personality and purpose. They are not souvenirs from the gift shop. A head hanging from a wall or a body “stuffed” for you to display is just a tragedy and a confirmation of the hunters ignorance and uncaring. Countries need to ban imports of trophy hunters’ kills. If a hunter can’t keep his trophy, then maybe he/she will stop hunting. Something needs to be done.
