Urge Republican Lawmakers to Prioritize Police Reform

Target: Tim Scott, South Carolina Senator (R)

Goal: Work with Democrats and push for police reform legislation.

In the past month, the use of excessive force by police across the United States has dominated news headlines. Two major stories involve the fatal police shooting of a 20-year-old Black male who was pulled over for having an air freshener hanging from his rearview mirror and of a 13-year-old Latino male who was fleeing police, but then stopped to comply with an officer’s commands to put his hands up. Many lawmakers are working to strike a bipartisan deal on police reform legislation that has passed the House but is up for debate in the Senate.

Representative Karen Bass, a California Democrat, said that the Republicans she’s working with on the issue “are operating in good faith.” She went on to say that she is “hopeful, because the group of people where we have been having just informal discussions are very sincere, and it’s a bipartisan group.”

Sign this petition to urge Republican lawmaker Tim Scott, who has been working with Rep. Bass, to push for police reform legislation and openly support it in the Senate.

PETITION LETTER:

To Rep. Scott,

The police system that is currently in place in the United States evolved from and with slavery and segregation. The injustices that are largely carried out against males of color needs to be stopped once and for all. This would require sweeping national reform of the police. Many lawmakers, including yourself, are working to make sure that justice is prioritized and that police officers are held accountable for their actions and don’t have immunity from the law.

I urge you to continue to work with Democrats to create bipartisan support for police reform legislation.

Sincerely,
