Target: John Boehner, Speaker of the House
Goal: Make the Lunar New Year a national holiday in order to show respect for Asian cultures that celebrate it
The Lunar New Year is not yet an official holiday in The United States. As a consequence, millions of Asian Americans are forced to miss work, school, or other important obligations in order to celebrate their culture’s new year with family and friends.
The Lunar New Year, or spring festival as it is literally translated from mandarin, is an important holiday in most Asian cultures. It is a time to not only look towards the future and celebrate the present, but also a time to look back at your past. The Lunar New Year is associated with many significant traditional myths and legends, and is also a time to honor one’s ancestors.
As the world’s self-proclaimed melting pot, America has officially recognized dozens of holidays in order to better incorporate foreign cultures into America. Why not the Lunar New Year?
To make the Lunar New Year an official holiday would be a simple action that would improve millions of American lives, while making people of Asian descent feel more at home here in the US. If we truly are as tolerant and accepting as we say we are, this should be an easy decision.
Please sign this petition and help make the Lunar New Year a national holiday.
Dear Mr. Boehner,
America has long been seen as a bastion of tolerance and freedom. However, the Lunar New Year is still not officially recognized as a national holiday. With millions of Asian Americans in this country, it is about time their cultural traditions receive the same consideration as others.
Currently, those who celebrate the Lunar New Year are forced to miss work, school, or other important obligations in order to bring in the New Year with friends and family. Designating an important cultural holiday like the Lunar New Year as a national holiday and allowing the Asian families to bring in the new year as well as honor their ancestors, are simple but powerful ways to improve the lives of Asian Americans within our borders and show our country’s appreciation for their culture and traditions.
Please make the easy decision and approve the Lunar New Year as a national holiday.
