Stop Slaughtering Majestic Lions for Trophies

Target: Ms. Barbara Creecy, Minister of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries in South Africa

Goal: Protect lions from gruesome death through trophy hunting.

The lions in South Africa are in acute danger due to the destruction of their habitats and humans’ gruesome hunting activities. These majestic animals endure horrible torture in captivity and meet a gruesome end during a sport called “canned hunting.” Despite growing evidence and civil society pressure, the closure of this industry is in a faraway distance.

Canned lion hunting in South Africa is one of the cruelest trophy hunting practices that exist in modern days. It is estimated that over 7,000 lions are held in captivity at over two hundred breeding farms across South Africa, although the number might be much higher.

The lions are born in captivity and forcefully taken away from their mothers within only a few hours of birth. The defenseless cubs are then used in petting zoos for human profit. The matured lions are moved to caged compounds where they spend the rest of their lives waiting to be released in yet another enclosure for the so-called ‘canned’ hunt. Trapped in the compounds, these magnificent animals do not stand a chance against the brutality of mankind.

After slaughtering the lions, the hunter leaves with his “trophy,” and the remains of the animal are sold in the international bone and meat trade.

The trade of live lions, parts, and byproducts other than for rescue, or as part of an endangered species breeding program and regulated scientific research has to stop. We must fight for the safeguard of these animals. The South African authorities have to end the cruel keeping of lions for canned hunting, and the ghastly practice itself.

Sign this petition to ban canned hunting in South Africa.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Miss Creecy,

Thousands of lions in South Africa are brutally slaughtered for human gain in a sport called “canned hunting.” This method entails the most horrific treatment of a living being. The animals are raised to be killed for entertainment, their parts are sold in the international bone and meat trade, all for human gain. South African lions are a vulnerable species, and this sport has a significant impact on the destruction of these majestic creatures. It is a great shame for a country to be associated with such cruelty.

The trade of live lions, parts, and byproducts other than for rescue, or as part of an endangered species breeding program and regulated scientific research must be prohibited. You must end the cruel keeping of these animals for canned hunting, and the ghastly practice itself. Save the precious lives of South African lions. Ban the hunt.

Sincerely,

  1. Should use the people doing this for a canned human hunt. Much more interesting since this would be a new idea. Also could sell tickets.Money could go to lion conservation.

  2. jiggabongo says:

Hunters are dickless coward scum. May they die in a hunting “accident” along with their offspring. Mother fuck them

  3. South Africa this is a disgrace and must stop.
Africa and South Africa are lucky to have lions – this is no way to treat Africa’s majestic wildlife. Africa’s wildlife belongs to the children of Africa.
The day will come, not long from now, when Africa and South Africa’s lions are gone… all of Africa’s wildlife will be gone… then you will understand the wrong you have done, but it will be too late to bring Africa’s wildlife back… explain your atrocious, cruel, selfish, greedy behaviour to Africa’s children & the children of the world.
You cut off your nose to spite your face with this hideous behaviour.

  4. Shirley Lemieux says:

It is so hard to fathom how the human thought process can find this behavior and cruelty to be totally acceptable. How would you like it if you gave birth to a child and someone came and stole it away from you only to live in cruel and inhumane conditions until they were shot and killed? Think about that for a moment and think of how arrogant and selfish it is to do this to another living being whether human or animal. That is of course, if you have any sort of conscience.

  5. Canned-lion hunting … just another of South Africa’s many shames!

  6. Michelle Stewart says:

Trophy hunting should be made illegal all over the world. Anyone caught should be shot

  7. Jon Lenchner says:

Trophy Hunters are Soulless Psychotic Sissies

  8. Val Gaffney says:

All hunters should be shot on sight with no questions asked Afterall if they are happy to treat a living breathing animal like this they deserve it. And South Africa don’t expect respect from others when you allow this kind of thing to happen – you are no better than the hunters

  9. It’s all for money 🙁 and unfortunately most Africans will sell their own family to get their hands on it 🙁 terrible generalization, yes…. Many times sadly very true. Hunters need to realize that their “sport” requires some work on their part and not just pulling a trigger. In my view real hunting is 1 human, 1 knife and the animal, in the bush… And at night.

  10. IT IS UNCONSCIONABLE AND UNACCEPTABLE THAT OUR MAJESTIC WILD LIONS HAVE BEEN AND CONTINUE TO BE HUNTED AND KILLED FOR STUPID TROPHIES. THE PEOPLE DOING THIS ARE SELFISH IGNORANT COLD-HEARTED PEOPLE THAT ARE JUST FEEDING THEIR SELFISH EGOS. LIONS NUMBERS HAVE BEEN DWINDLING FOR THE PAST FOUR DECADES, AND WE HAVE GOT TO DO ALL THAT WE CAN TO STOP THIS AND REVERSE IT. THESE BEAUTIFUL MAGNIFICENT ANIMALS ARE VITALLY IMPORTANT TO OUR ECOSYSTEMS AND ENVIRONMENTS AND THEY NEED TO BE RESPECTED AND PROTECTED.

  11. These POS “hunters” want an actual challenge??? Why not hunt each other … a few less worthless assholes in this world would be awesome. It’s not something these cowardly fuckers would want to do. God forbid .. what they plan to hunt .. has the chance to shoot back.

  12. STOP SLAUGHTERING AND KILLING LIONS AND ALL OTHER WILD ANIMALS IMMEDIATELY!!! NO KILLING DOMESTICATED ANIMALS EITHER!!!!!

  13. Some trophy hunting, this canned sport crap is!! Cornering a defenceless animal and killing him and pretending it was a big showdown??
I hope the whole world cooperates and that airlines will refuse to ship trophy hunting animal parts as well as UPS, so they can never get it home.
Souless killing the Majestic Lion, you will always be the Loser!!

  14. What a sick image of the spirit of Man. To have such desires to kill. To want to kill these beautiful beings….some are bred to be shot down in a fenced in areas called canned hunting, treated like trash their entire lives. The others are invaded in their homes. Remember Cecil who was tortured; shot, followed by the dentist to watch him dying of his wounds? Then even one of his Cubs were killed. This is not just “Africa” this is about all the evil minds that have no idea about compassion and with no self worth they feel that killing these creatures is an “accomplishment”. They see no beauty in themselves, so they have to steal beauty in these divine creatures and kill them. It is these twisted humans that spend 100’s of 1,000s to kill. This planet would be much better off without such humans. They are a disease; worse than any natural disaster.

  15. Rose Coffey says:

This tragic episode needs to be banned and banned immediately at that. I think we should be allowed to have patrol guards who have permission to shoot anyone hunting lions or any other endangered species. What filthy mind would want to take down such a magnificent animal for a trophy?

  16. Maria Bertrand says:

Ms. Barbara Creecy, Minister of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries in South Africa

YOUR COUNTRY IS MEDIEVAL AND WITHOUT HUMANITY TO ALLOW THESE TYPES OF PRACTICES AND HORRIFIC HUNTS. STOP STOP STOP AND PROTECT ALL THE LIONS…ALL THE ANIMALS …NOW THERE WOULD BE A REAL TURN OF DIRECTION. PLEASE PLEASE SAVE THEM ALL.

I HOPE EVERY ANIMAL THAT HAS BEEN ABUSED, KILLED GET THEIR REVENGE ON ALLL THE PERPETRATORS. I HOPE THEY CHEW YOU UP TO DUST!!!! YOU ALL DESERVED TO BE HUNTED BACK!!!!!!

  17. These thrill-killers should be forced to hunt each other. Then it would be a fair hunt….Animal cruelty/thrill killings can not longer be tolerated. It is well past time to allow all wildlife to live the life they were meant to live. Very stiff punishments and fines need to be the norm… IMO

  20. All those murderers should be sodomized and then shot!
