Stop Invasive Species From Destroying Aquatic Ecosystems

Target: Bernadette Jordan, Canadian Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard

Goal: Take measures to remove aquatic invasive species that are destroying ecosystems.

Zebra mussels are invading the Great Lakes and causing environmental and property damage. If left unchecked, this invasive species will cause irreparable harm and be even more difficult to remove than they are now.

The zebra mussel invaded from Russia and the Ukraine, and they have no natural predators in Canada. A single female zebra mussel can lay up to 5 million eggs in her life, meaning this issue is multiplying at an alarming rate. To date, they have caused billions of dollars of property damage and have impacted drinking water supply to many citizens. Zebra mussels are a particular threat to the native mollusk, and they consume large quantities of plankton and deprive other aquatic life of this vital food source.

Sign this petition to urge the government to intervene and stop the devastating spread of the zebra mussel.

Dear Honourable Jordan,

Zebra mussels are invading the Great Lakes and causing horrible damage to the environment and personal property. They are a non-native species that is depriving native aquatic species of habitats and food. The mollusk is particularly at risk.

There are no local predators of the zebra mussel and they reproduce at an alarming rate. They have caused billions of dollars of damage, including threatening the water supply to many people.

I urge you to take action and stop the spread of this invasive aquatic species.
