Trump: Encourage Hesitant But Loyal Followers to Get Vaccinated

Target: Donald Trump, former President of the United States

Goal: Promote safety and efficiency of COVID-19 vaccines to legions of followers.

An estimated 30 percent of Americans have received at least one dose of the three COVID-19 vaccines currently available for distribution. Over two million shots a day are being administered, as available supplies ramp up significantly. With the Biden administration’s announcement that all Americans over the age of 16 will be eligible for a vaccine by May 1, the country seems well on its way to putting the worst of the pandemic behind it. One major barrier could pose a major setback for this effort, however: vaccine hesitancy.

So-called herd immunity is the key to ending any pandemic. In this condition, a sufficient number of the population has acquired immunity against the contagion, rendering it unable to spread easily and mutate into more dangerous forms. Public health experts estimate that around 80 percent of the American population would need to have protection against COVID-19 in order to reach herd immunity. The majority of this protection would be gained through vaccination, since the current vaccines are believed to provide up to 95 percent protection against the disease.

The number of Americans who say they will receive a vaccine when it becomes available to them has risen exponentially over the past few weeks, even among sectors of the population (such as African Americans) who have shown a higher degree of vaccine hesitancy. Unfortunately, this upward trend has not held true for one major portion of the population: Republicans, particularly Republican men. A recent poll conducted by public radio and television outlets found that Republicans refusing to get vaccinated numbered at 41 percent. If the Republicans were men, the number jumped an additional eight points, comprising roughly half of that population. Other polls have put the number of Republican-leaning refusers as high as 57 percent. If such a large percentage of the population will not even entertain the notion of a vaccine, then the United States will have a much more difficult time reaching its goal and resuming a state of normalcy.

This issue should not be political, but it has remained a lightning rod of partisanship since the pandemic began…first with mask-wearing and now with vaccinations. Undeniably, the person who could make the most difference in this disparity is former President Donald Trump, who still enjoys overwhelming support and allegiance from Republicans. Despite receiving the vaccine himself in January, the president has remained mostly quiet on the subject.

Sign the petition below to urge the former president to support an effort that could save the lives of so many of his faithful followers.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Trump,

Over 1,000 Americans are still dying of COVID-19 daily. Many of these victims valued and followed your guidance. Please help guide those they left behind—and the country as a whole—on a better course.  Tens of millions believe in you. If you told them about your own vaccine experience and encouraged them to receive the protection your administration helped make possible, it could be a game-changer for the country.

The estimated 40 to 60 percent of Republicans who claim they will not get vaccinated could mean the difference between herd immunity and normalcy and the indefinite continuation of death and economic destruction. Please join in promoting these life-saving tools.

Your recent appearance on a Fox News broadcast championing the vaccines was a tremendous start, but you could use your platform (including rallies, press releases, and other media appearances) to do far more good. Such outreach could be your most important and lasting legacy yet.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
