Stop Deliberately Pumping Greenhouse Gases Into the Air

Target: Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada

Goal: Make reducing routine flaring in Canada mandatory, and move up the deadline to save our environment.

Every day, oil and gas companies pump greenhouse gases into the air. Unequivocally, this industry is one of the worst perpetrators of environmental destruction, and routine flaring is one example of this intentional malpractice. These flares are used at refineries and oil wells to release pressure that has built up during production, and globally burn 140 billion cubic meters of natural gas and release 300 million tons of CO2 annually.

The recent weather disaster in Texas saw a significant increase in routine flares as companies struggled to maintain themselves during shutdown. This should be an indicator as to how fragile the oil and gas sector is, and how unsound the current management practices are.

Canada has joined the Zero Routine Flaring by 2030 initiative, but this is not enough. There are many alternatives to flaring, and experts feel implementing these would be attainable by 2025. Furthermore, all operations in Canada must meet the goal or be heavily penalized.

Sign this petition to have the government implement zero routine flaring by 2025, and to enforce it on all companies operating in Canada.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Prime Minister,

I am heartened to hear that Canada supports the Zero Routine Flaring by 2030 initiative. However, more can, and must be done. Many experts believe that these results are attainable as early as 2025, and I encourage you to push the oil and gas sector to make this transition as quickly as possible. The damage being done to our environment on a global scale is largely irreparable, and action must be taken immediately.

I urge you to make it mandatory for all affected companies to comply with these measures, or be heavily penalized. I realize that implementing strict measures would have enormous economic impacts, but the impact on our environment has far more dire consequences.

Sincerely,

These companies will continue to dump their waste into the air and or water. They have no mercy for this earth. They destroy earth everyday. Shutting them down will mean an economic loss but to allow their continued abuse means certain death for the planet and all of us. They are blatant in not caring what their abuses cause. They aren’t stupid and are aware they will be shut down. If I were them I would be working hard to find a way to compromise but they must feel we can not survive without them. It may not be easy but it can be done. Once another form is found these companies will be closed anyway.
