Target: Senate Democratic Majority Leader Harry Reid
Goal: Remove Senator Robert Menendez from his position as head of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee
Information has recently come forward about a suspect relationship between New Jersey junior Seantor Robert Menendez and Dr. Salomon Melegen, a wealthy Florida eye surgeon and major Democratic party donor. It appears that Senator Menendez, current head of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has gone to great lengths to help Dr. Melegen revive a $500 million port security contract with the Dominican Republic, despite Dr. Melegen’s inexperience in the realm of border security. To raise further questions, Dr. Melegen donated a large sum to a Democratic Super Pac that also funded Senator Menendez’s recent reelection campaign. Until a further investigation happens into this extremely questionable relationship, Senator Menendez should be removed from his position of leadership with the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
Details are coming forward about Senator Menendez’s brazen attempts to solicit this contract for Dr. Menendez, some saying he went so far as to bring the contract up in a Foreign Relations Committee meeting in July of last year. In addition, it is reported that Menendez pressed State and Commerce Department officials on multiple occasions, insisting that this contract be honored. The contract had been inactive for a while, in part because government officials and business leaders in the Dominican Republic saw the $500 million contract as an exorbitant giveaway. Menendez reportedly even actively discouraged plans by Homeland Security to donate port security equipment to the Dominican Republic.
All of this alleged assistance on Senator Menendez’s part becomes even more suspect in conjunction with the fact that Dr. Melegen made a large donation to Majority PAC, a Democratic Super PAC started in part by former advisers to Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. By the time the 2012 election was said and done, Majority PAC had donated $582,500 to Senator Menendez’s reelection campaign.
By signing this petition you are urging Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to remove Senator Menendez from his position as chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee until this matter can be further investigated. Although at this point nothing has been proved, there should be an inquiry before Senator Menendez can again be entrusted with this position of leadership.
Dear Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid,
In light of recent facts that have surfaced regarding the relationship between Senator Robert Menendez and Dr. Salomon Melegen, I am writing you to request that Senator Menendez be removed from his position of leadership as head of the Senate Foreign Relationship Committee until an investigation can occur into this matter. Senator Menendez’s reported attempts to revive a $500 million Dominican Republic port security contract for Dr. Melegen, an eye surgeon with little experience in the field, raise questions about Senator Menendez’s ethics and his ability to hold this position of leadership and power.
Senator Menendez allegedly attempted to revive this contract – which had been dormant in part because business leaders and government officials in the Dominican Republic saw it has a government throwaway – by pressing State and Commerce Department officials, as well as by bringing the matter up in a Foreign Relations Committee hearing last July. Reportedly, Senator Menendez even actively discouraged Homeland Security from donating old port security equipment to the Dominican Republic.
All of the questionable actions are made even more suspect by the fact that Dr. Melegen donated $700,000 to Majority PAC for the last election cycle. Majority PAC donated $582,500 to Senator Menendez’s reelection campaign in the same year. Please, remove Senator Menendez from his position of power in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee until this matter can be further investigated.
