Target: Claude Bartolone, President of the French National Assembly
Goal: Thank the French National Assembly for passing a bill to legalize gay marriage and adoption
The National Assembly of France has voted 329 to 229 to pass a bill legalizing gay marriage and adoption after weeks of debate. Though the bill must now be adopted by the French Senate, it is now likely to become the law of the land. The legislature passed the bill with a resounding majority despite intense opposition from the Catholic Church and some French Muslims.
This is a historic step for marriage equality worldwide, and for France itself, who has a historical commitment to equality under the law. Not since the abolition of the death penalty in 1981 has France passed such an important piece of social justice legislation.
After weeks of debate and arguments from both sides, the legislature passed the bill, which is in line with a majority of French people’s opinions on both gay marriage and adoption. In so doing, France joins the UK in moving forward on marriage equality in Europe, a step long overdue. Eleven other countries in Europe have legalized gay marriage.
Although France has had civil unions for couples regardless of gender for some time now, they did not enjoy the same privileges as married couples, notably on inheritance issues.
France’s legislature deserves to be applauded for endorsing marriage equality for the French people. By signing the petition below, you will add your voice to those thanking the National Assembly for legalizing gay marriage and adoption, and in so doing will put more pressure on countries who have yet to endorse marriage equality.
Dear Claude Bartolone, President of the National Assembly of France,
I would like to congratulate you and your legislature for taking the historic step of legalizing gay marriage in France. I also want to express my sincere hope that the French Senate passes the bill quickly. Marriage equality is extremely important and I think I speak for millions of people worldwide in saying that legalizing gay marriage and adoption is unequivocally the right thing to do.
Despite weeks of opposition to the passage of the bill, your legislature has at last voted decisively in favor of equal rights, which is consistent with France’s historically courageous stances on equality for all. I believe legalizing gay marriage in France will significantly improve France’s image worldwide as an ardent supporter of equality and human rights.
