Congress: Prioritize Kids Over Gun Lobbyists

Target: Chuck Schumer, U.S. Senate Majority Leader

Goal: Enact gun control reforms that can curb mass casualty shooting events.

On February 14 of 2018, a school of teenagers began the morning thinking about dates, dances, and young romance. They ended that day traumatized, shaken, and re-living the modern Valentine’s Day Massacre that had upended their lives. Over a dozen of these kids lost more than their innocence…they lost their lives during the Marjory Stoneman Douglas shooting. On the three-year anniversary of this tragedy that killed 17, President Biden marked the sad passage with condolences and a renewed call to action that survivors have never forsaken: “we owe it to all those we’ve lost and to all those left behind to grieve to make a change. The time to act is now.”

In his remarks, the president called on Congress to at last enact common-sense gun reform. He advocated for universal background checks to cover all gun purchases, like the loophole buys at gun show transactions that often fall through the cracks. Other proposals include an end to the shielding of gun manufacturers from responsibility and liability. In addition, the president has advocated for an abolishment of the high-capacity magazines and assault weapon instruments of mass murder such as the one used by the Parkland shooter.

In the past, even the most minimal attempts at reform have been blocked by powerful lobbyists and the politicians beholden to them. With a new national legislature comes a new opportunity…one that cannot be taken for granted. Sign the petition below to let lawmakers know that we are tired of the least they can do. Now, they must do everything in their power to protect all innocents from deadly harm.

Dear Senator Schumer,

For the past year, America has kept many of its children out of school for their safety. They cannot be sent back safeguarded from one danger while completely vulnerable to a lingering threat. The anniversary of the Parkland tragedy brings the semi-forgotten but never faded epidemic of mass shootings back into sharp focus. While the opportunities for these disturbed individuals may have decreased, their motivation—and their means—certainly have not diminished. We demand these kids receive protection for their health, their well-being, and their ability to thrive in a safe and secure learning environment.

President Biden has implored both chambers of Congress to at last answer the desperate pleas from survivors, families, and Americans of all ages to listen…and more importantly to act. Measures such as bans on high-capacity magazines and assault weapons, universal background checks, and legal liability for gun manufacturers may be politically inconvenient and divisive. For any true and meaningful reform to take place, however, they need to be part of the conversation and the solution.

The House of Representatives has signaled its intention to take up background checks and other gun reform measures. Do not wait for the next community defined by one horrific act for Senate involvement. Please commit to a comprehensive bill that will honor the victims and survivors of Parkland, Sandy Hook, Columbine, Las Vegas, and too many more to name.

This united effort should become your next consequential, and life-saving, rescue package.

  1. Tiffany White…I presume that you know better…therefore this effort of yours is based on lies. Civilians without a class three license may not own an assault rifle and I question whether you even know what an assault rifle is! Do you propose to make General Motors liable for anytime a drunk kills someone with a GM product? Have you ever or are you just spouting off platitudes that, once again, you know nothing about? Do you know what a high capacity magazine is? You are trying to use your influence on here to get law abiding people to lose their rights and property and for that I’m calling you out in public. Either explain your position or take this silly petition off this site!
