Give the Whole World a Fighting Chance Against COVID-19

Target: Volkan Bozkır, President of the General Assembly of the United Nations

Goal: Make stronger investment in program to address inequities in COVID-19 vaccine distribution.

Wealthy countries have snapped up most available COVID vaccines worldwide. As an example, while Israel leads the world by vaccinating over 40 percent of its population, Palestine has received little to no doses. Oceans away, Canada came under fire for securing a large percentage of vaccine supplies from the international COVAX initiative meant for poorer and less advantaged countries. Such disparities continue to play out all over the world, threatening to leave hundreds of millions of people behind in the battle against a pandemic raging across the globe.

The World Health Organization’s COVAX program was hailed as a massive blockade against inequities that might arise in vaccine distribution. A total of 165 countries are supposed to be represented under COVAX, but so far the program has only secured a few million doses to cover these international populations. Complicating the problem, the organizations running this program seemingly over-invested in a single vaccine that has been demonstrated to be far less effective against more contagious strains of COVID-19. Prior lack of commitment to the program from richer countries like the United States (which declined to join the initiative under the previous administration) has hindered its progress as well.

Without a more cohesive and robust commitment to ensuring  success, global vaccination efforts will continue lagging, imperiling the efforts of societies all over the world that crave a return to normalcy. Sign the petition below to urge a laser-focus on the COVAX initiative by the United Nations.

Dear Mr. Bozkır,

We truly are all in this together. If just one region of the world fails in COVID-19 vaccination efforts, we all fail. Infections will continue to travel the world, and new and potentially more lethal mutations have the opportunity to thrive. The COVAX program was supposed to be a great hope for combatting the world’s foremost health and humanitarian crisis. Yet inequities and missteps remain and have in fact deepened in some cases.

This initiative needs the full attention of the world’s most formative unifying organization. Bottlenecks in distribution must be addressed urgently, inadequate supplies must be boosted, effective options must be ensured, and real long-term investments must be made. Please fulfill the United Nations mission of “peace, dignity, and equality on a healthy planet” by devoting more time and resources to the transformative COVAX effort.

The fate of the world may very well depend on this commitment.

We must ensure ALL people are vaccinated or this pandemic will never end.
