Stop Factory Fish Farms from Polluting the Ocean

Target: Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada

Goal: Shut down open-pen aquaculture in the Atlantic Ocean.

Open-pen fish farms leach toxins into the ocean, harm wildlife, and even cause cancer and disease in humans. However, they are on the rise off the eastern coast of Canada. This type of aquaculture is already being phased out in the Pacific, and it is imperative to stop this in all coastal waters.

These fish pens are treated with dyes, pesticides, antibiotics, and heavy metals. Massive quantities of feces and other waste build up on the ocean floor and poison the water and beaches. It has also been noticed that there is a significant decrease in the number of sea birds near open pen fisheries.

Consuming these fish puts people at an elevated risk of cancer, yet fish from open-pens account for all Atlantic and farmed salmon in stores and restaurants. Infectious Salmon Anemia (ISA) is an internationally reportable disease that runs rampant in open pens, but the Canadian Food Inspection Agency has approved these infected fish for human consumption. Sea lice on farmed salmon have also found their way into grocery stores across the country. Meanwhile, large-scale escapes of salmon from open pens contaminate wild marine life with these contagious issues.

No animal should be raised in such confined and unhealthy conditions, especially with such widespread negative implications. Sign this petition to stop open pen fish farming off the east coast.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Prime Minister,

I urge you to put an end to open-pen fish farming in all Canadian waters. Stopping this damaging industry has already begun in British Columbia, but it is still poisoning the Atlantic Ocean. Open-pen aquaculture contaminates the ocean with antibiotics, pesticides, dyes, heavy metals, feces, and other waste, threatening marine and coastal life.

Infected animals also find their way onto grocery shelves. Consumption of even a few of these feedlot fish exposes humans to unacceptable levels of carcinogens. This is a scary fact considering that all Atlantic and farmed salmon available in Canada are open-pen fish.

In light of the environmental and human dangers posed by open-pen fish farms, it is irresponsible to continue this type of aquaculture. Since it is already being stopped in the west, Canada should present a united front in its protection of coastal waters. Stop open-pen fish farming in all of Canada.

Sincerely,
