Don’t Risk Water Contamination By Drilling for Oil

Target: The President of Namibia, Hage Geingob

Goal: Stop Recon Africa from drilling for oil in the Kavango Basin and Okavango Delta.

Recon Africa is looking to drill for oil in the Kavango–Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA TFCA,) where the largest remaining elephant population resides. The region is home to an array of wildlife species. Conservationists are concerned that drilling will be detrimental to the groundwater supply- in an area where clean water is a precious resource. At a time when the world is working hard to divest from fossil fuels and shift towards a clean energy economy, the interest in drilling and possibly fracking is short sighted counterintuitive.

Currently the Canadian company is doing exploration drilling. If they find reason to believe the region has the lucrative potential they hope for, it will be difficult to sway their interest in drilling further. The KAZA TFCA does not have the same environmental protection as the national parks. It is an incredibly important and vulnerable ecosystem that is in grave need of protection. Sign the petition below to demand that oil drilling permits be denied in the KAZA TFCA.

Dear President Geingob,

The KAZA TFCA is home to the largest remaining African elephant population.  The area is an intrical part of the local culture and the ecosystem as a whole. Recon Africa’s plans to drill for oil in this region would be a great devastation. Not only by disrupting the wildlife, but also by contaminating critical water sources.

With the climate changing rapidly and people around the world working to make necessary changes to keep up, it is of the utmost importance that industries divest from fossil fuels and work towards a sustainable future. Drilling for oil now is an act against the common good of all life on earth- and especially those closest to the point of impact that are local to the area. The KAZA TFCA as well as the Okavango Delta must be preserved and protected. I urge you to put a stop to Recon Africa before they cause irreversible damage to the region.
