Protect Wild Salmon Habitat From Open Pit Mining

Target: Patty Murray, Senator for Washington State

Goal: Implement permanent environmental protections for Bristol Bay, Alaska.

Bristol Bay is under siege. This pristine watershed is home to all five species of Pacific Salmon as well as several other protected species. It is vital to the world’s largest sockeye salmon run and provides nearly half of the world’s harvest. The region’s fish feed a multitude of species including bald eagles and brown bears. There is however an interest in the gold and copper deposit at the headwaters of Bristol Bay.

The Pebble Mine project seeks to develop an open pit mine that would be extremely harmful to the area. The Army Corps of engineers denied the permit to begin construction. While this buys time, Bristol Bay is in dire need of permanent legal protections. Sign the petition below to demand this critical watershed be preserved.

Dear Senator Murray,

Bristol Bay, Alaska is not only a national treasure, but also a vital habitat for a multitude of species including all five Pacific Salmon populations. This region is said to feed the world and is responsible for a huge portion of salmon harvest. The fish fill a key role both culturally and environmentally. There are few strongholds left for them and it is of the utmost importance that we take their survival seriously and protect this vital habitat.

The Army Corps denial of the Pebble Mines permit to construct an open pit mine was a temporary solution at best. Bristol Bay needs permanent protection. Nothing short of it will do. I urge you to take the steps necessary to preserve this watershed and protect the species that are reliant on it to survive.

Permanently protect Bristol Bay. Limit ship traffic in Washington state in areas known to be populated by whales. REMOVE THE LOWER SNAKE RIVER DAMS NOW. We need salmon. Wildlife needs salmon. PLEASE DO NOT DESTROY THIS VITAL FOOD SOURCE WHICH SUSTAINS SO MANY.
