Hold Gun Distributors Liable for Damages

Semi Automatic Rifles Q and A

Target: Governor John Hickenlooper

Goal: Hold semi-automatic gun owners, manufacturers and distributors civilly liable for damages caused by their weapons.

A bill introduced by Colorado lawmakers would hold owners, manufacturers and distributors of semi-automatic firearms civilly liable for damages caused by their weapons. Proponents of the bill are hoping it will force gun manufacturers and retailers to invest more in background checks, discourage gun sales in the state and lead to a decrease in illegal sales. Please sign this petition and support Colorado’s bold move to increase accountability in semi-automatic gun sales and use.

As part of Colorado’s new gun control provisions, legislators have proposed a bill that would hold owners, manufactures, and distributors civilly liable for damages caused by their semi-automatic rifles. Handguns, bolt-action rifles and shot guns would be exempt from the measure. If passed, the bill would put Colorado at odds with a 2005 federal law protecting gun manufacturers from being held liable for crimes committed with their products. The proposed bill includes lifting current state statues that shield manufacturers, importers and dealers from such liability.

The proposed bill is intended to deter the sale of semi-automatic weapons in the state by holding more parties accountable to the person controlling the gun in the end. The bill would inevitably lead to an increase in universal background checks and expanded mental health restrictions. Perhaps if gun distributors were held accountable for the person they sell to, they would also support increased background checks. The bill is amongst a slew of other gun control provisions, although this piece has far-reaching implications for gun use in the state.

Please sign this petition and urge Colorado lawmakers to pass the bill to hold semi-automatic gun owners, manufacturers and distributors civilly liable for damages caused by guns.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Governor Hickenlooper,

Legislation recently introduced in Colorado would hold semi-automatic gun owners, manufactures and distributors civilly liable for damages caused by the weapons. Please support the bill in an effort to decrease sales and increase background checks in semi-automatic gun sales. Handguns, bolt-actions rifles and shotguns would be exempt from the measure.

If passed, the state law would be challenging a 2005 federal law protecting gun manufacturers from liability. As we have seen with marijuana laws, Colorado is a fearless, responsible and unique state able to make its rules. Increasing liability on the selling side of semi-automatic guns will increase investment in background checks and responsible selling practices. Illegal gun sales and theft will be easier to track with increased accountability. The extra measures will discourage semi-automatic gun sales in our state, which could possibly lead to a decrease in related incidents.

I urge you to support and gain the support of others, in passing the bill to hold semi-automatic gun owners, manufactures and distributors liable for damage caused by said guns.

Sincerely,
