Call for More Coverage of Gang Rape in South Africa

Target: International media

Goal: Pay more attention to gang rape in South Africa, not just a single case in Delhi, India

The international media was rightfully outraged by a brutal gang rape of a woman on a bus in Delhi, India, but when subsequent attacks occurred elsewhere in the world not much later, there was a relative lack of attention. One such example is the case of Anene Booysen in South Africa, who was beaten, gang raped, and mutilated just a week ago, dying shortly afterward. The case has sparked outrage and disgust in South Africa, but has garnered comparatively little attention in the worldwide press.

By paying less attention to depressingly common gang rape cases like Anene Booysen’s, the media gives the impression that such brutal attacks occur in only a few places with relatively rare frequency, which is unfortunately not the case.

The Women’s League of South Africa’s ruling party expressed “disgust” over the rape, and efforts are being made to try some of the perpetrators, but if meaningful systemic change on the issue of rape is to come to South Africa as is hoped in India, the world must express more concern over the case.

By signing the petition below, you will express your wish that the global media give this case more coverage and play its crucial role in consciousness-raising about the epidemic of gang rape going on all over the world, not just in an isolated case in India.

Dear editors of international media outlets,

We applaud your extensive coverage of the India gang rape tragedy and the subsequent outrage in India, and believe it has made a meaningful impact. But we ask that you not stop there, and continue to cover heinous sexual assault crimes worldwide. A recent example is that of Anene Booysen in South Africa, a 17-year-old girl who was gang raped and beaten to death. There is an outcry within South Africa over the case, but the international press has been relatively quiet about it in comparison to the case in India.

In your role as agenda-setters and truth-tellers worldwide, we ask that you pay more attention to international rape cases, including the heinous crime against Anene Booysen in South Africa. Failing to do so may give the impression to average people that such egregious rapes are uncommon and localized problems, when in fact they are widespread and depressingly common.

Please provide more coverage of the cases so that the world can take action against to prevent future outrages.
