Ban Fans at March Madness Basketball Tournament to Prevent Coronavirus Spread

Target: Mark Emmert, President of the NCAA

Goal: Do not allow fans at March Madness basketball tournament games.

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has decided to host its men’s basketball tournament, known as March Madness, solely in Indiana. This decision allows teams to limit travel and, therefore, contains the threat of coronavirus among teams. However, the NCAA has still not made a decision on whether or not to allow fans to attend March Madness games.

The tournament involves 67 games and usually is held at sites across the United States. This year, the NCAA is working with health officials in Indiana to determine safety protocols and facilitate coronavirus testing throughout the tournament. These decisions come after having to cancel the tournament last March, when coronavirus spread accelerated throughout the United States. Dan Gavitt, the NCAA’s senior vice president for basketball, said: “The 2021 version of March Madness will be one to remember, if for no other reason than the uniqueness of the event. This is going to be complicated and difficult; there’s no question about that.”

Professional sports leagues, including Major League Basement and the National Football League, have been unable to keep coronavirus off their rosters as games continued despite the threat of the virus. As infections and deaths as a result of coronavirus continue to rise, allowing spectators should not be an option at this year’s March Madness tournament. Sign this petition to urge the NCAA to hold the March Madness games without fans.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Emmert,

The coronavirus pandemic continues to rage across the United States as numbers of infections and related deaths rise. In states like California, hospitals are running out of ICU beds to treat patients suffering from coronavirus. This pandemic is in full swing and health officials have made it incredibly clear that one tried and true method of prevention is social distancing and limiting or eliminating unnecessary public exposure.

The NCAA is making unprecedented decisions to keep players and coaches safe while continuing the annual tradition of the March Madness tournament. I urge you to take every possible step to ensure the health and safety of the athletes, coaches, and staff by banning fans and spectators from tournament games.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
