Stop Keystone XL Pipeline from Destroying Our Sustainable Future

Target: Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada

Goal: Protect the environment and Indigenous rights by stopping the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline.

The highly controversial Keystone XL pipeline will strip the boreal forest of northern Alberta of 830,000 barrels of oil each day. The devastation of a natural landscape, the dangers of spills and contamination, and the trampling of Indigenous rights are reasons enough to stop this pipeline, but it also sets an unsustainable future for years to come. Help stop the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline.

The Keystone XL will increase mining in the tar sands, dig up vast areas of forest, destroy wildlife habitats, and endanger the lives of local First Nations people. It also disrespects Indigenous rights and ignores treaty agreements set out by the Canadian Constitution.

The oil from Alberta’s tar sands is more acidic and more corrosive than conventional crude, increasing the risk of leaks and spills. Wetlands and rivers are particularly at risk. Environment Canada has already found toxic chemicals leaking into the Athabasca River from the rape of the tar sands, and the Keystone will cross 1,000 rivers, streams, and other bodies of water.

Canada has obligations to battle climate change, yet the Keystone XL pipeline will produce a further 177 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions each year. By supporting this project, the Canadian and Albertan governments have lied about their commitments to a clean and sustainable future. The way of the future is sustainable energy, and by promising billions of dollars to the oil and gas industry, the government will effectively put an end to furthering green energy in western Canada.

The government needs to be held accountable to their promises to help the environment. Sign this petition to stop one of the biggest threats to North America’s green future.

Dear Mr. Prime Minister,

Canada has obligations to stop climate change and to create a clean and sustainable future. Canada should not support the Keystone XL pipeline. Even though billions of dollars are at stake, this cannot compare to the threat to our priceless environment.

This pipeline exposes thousands of bodies of water to irreparable contamination, endangering the people and animals they support. Not to mention the devastation caused at the source: the tar sands of the pristine boreal forest of northern Alberta. The destruction of this forest alone is a crime against nature that can never be exonerated.

The Keystone XL pipeline will put 177 million metric tons of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere every year. How can Canada make promises of a clean future while supporting a polluter of this magnitude? Green, sustainable energy is the future, but encouraging this project will lock the federal and provincial governments into a long-term patronage of the oil and gas industry.

I urge you, as a concerned citizen of a fragile planet, to put an end to the Keystone XL pipeline, and move forward into a better future.
