Stop Covering-Up Environmental Impacts From Arctic Oil Drilling

Target: Aurelia Skipwith, Director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

Goal: Stop hiding the truth about the dangers of oil drilling in the Arctic.

The Trump administration is once again putting Big Oil special interests ahead of the future of America’s wildlife. In service of its rush to sell off Arctic wildlife refuges to fossil fuel corporations, the Trump Administration is obscuring critical data about the animals most impacted by these reckless transactions. The withheld information could go a long way in helping conservation efforts for manatees, sea otters, walruses, and polar bears.

According to national law, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is required to report population analyses of these animals on a regular basis. The Center for Biological Diversity, in a lawsuit directed at the agency, calls the assessment “woefully outdated.” They also charge the administration with trying to hide this data in order to avoid scrutiny about the tremendously adverse effect the proposed Arctic deals will have on these already-vulnerable populations. Previously, the agency had also delayed releasing findings of a study about the oil drilling’s impact on Arctic wildlife.

Sign the petition below to demand transparency and truth on information that could safeguard animals put at risk by a careless government.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Director Skipwith,

You are violating the Marine Mammal Protection Act, first by delaying the results of a study on effects of oil drilling on Arctic wildlife. Now, you are refusing to release other critical information regarding population assessments of polar bears, sea otters, manatees, and walruses. It seems hardly a coincidence that these very animals may be most detrimentally impacted by oil spills.

Your duty and your oath is to this nation’s real most precious natural resources, not to profiteering companies or opportunistic politicians. It should not take a lawsuit to compel you to do the right thing. Do not work in the interests of destruction, but help scientists work toward preservation instead. Update and release all relevant information immediately.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]

It’s now or never …if it is not already too late! And beside, there is enough oil in the world, the Arctic is world’s protected area by conventions (Oslo and others)

  5. Using sustainable energies is the only way we are going to stop climate change and save our Earth. It’s past due that we put our money into creating and maintaining new infrastructure such as solar instead of polluting with the drilling, spills and burning of fossil fuels. The current administration has been pushing more fossil fuel exploration and cutting hard won improves standards for car emissions just to put more money in their pockets. It has to end! I hope that the new administration lives up to it’s promises of a Green Deal.
