Target: Primer Minister Peter O’Neill
Goal: Prevent extreme violence against people accused of sorcery in Papua New Guinea
Sorcery is such a serious offense in the country of Papua New Guinea that locals have been taking matters into their own hands. People who are accused of witchcraft and sorcery have been killed and tortured by fellow citizens of the nation. The most recent killing was so horrendous and brutal that the United Nations felt the need to step in. A 20 year-old woman was stripped and burned alive in front of hundreds of people for supposedly using sorcery to kill a 6-year-old boy. The victim, Kepari Leniata, was tortured and killed by the deceased boy’s relatives. The crowd was so immense that the police and firemen could not successfully intervene to prevent the death. This kind of violence shown by anyone should never be allowed. The government of Papua New Guinea must put a stop to vigilante violence before more innocent people are murdered.
Leniata’s horrific case unfortunately was not the only one to occur. Her murder happened in Mount Hagen, which is a capital located in the Western Highlands. Another tragic event took place in Jiwaka, in which three women and two men were kidnapped by the locals and held for 20 days. Before killing the five people accused of witchcraft, the locals used scorching hot iron rods and knives to torture them. These events have to stop before more and more people start to feel entitled and decide to kill whomever they want.
The people who are killing act similarly to gangs, and they are getting away with murder. It is time that the government start to punish those responsible and put an end to these murders. The government must also find ways to stop the vigilante killings. Research also shows that the victims tend to be widows that do not have relatives to defend them, and they get raped and tortured before being killed ruthlessly. The attacks are also mostly being carried out by men and boys who are often under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
These murders must stop immediately. The brutality behind these attacks and murders are unacceptable and horrific. The government has to step in and put an end to these killings.
Dear Primer Minister Peter O’Neill,
The people in your nation have taken situations into their own hands. People accused of witchcraft and sorcery are being raped, tortured and murdered ruthlessly by locals from different communities. These vigilantes use extreme measures to murder the suspects.
The most recent case involved the live burning of a 20 year-old woman who was accused of using witchcraft to kill a 6-year-old boy. The deceased boy’s relatives stripped the woman and burned her in front of hundreds of people. The police and firemen were rendered useless by the crowd that blocked any access to the victim.
Vigilante violence has to stop before more and more innocent people are killed.
