Eliminate Child Labor from the Girl Scout Cookies Supply Chain

Target: Luc Mongeau, President, Weston Foods

Goal: Ensure no child labor is used in the production or baking of popular Girl Scout cookies.

Dangerous child labor may be behind the production of popular Girl Scout cookies like Thin Mints, Lemon-Ups, and Tagalongs. This shocking news was broken by Associated Press reporters who linked Girl Scout cookies to the illegal labor of tens of thousands of children.

The AP wrote that these children are subjected to physical, mental, and sexual abuse. They are denied basic healthcare and education. Many of them are born on the palm oil plantations where they work to parents who are also subjected to the torture of illegal slave labor. Children who are “rescued” from the plantations are more often than not isolated in detention centers by authorities. This abuse goes against all the Girl Scouts organization claims to stand for.

Girl Scouts of the USA released a statement that said, “Child labor has no place in Girl Scout Cookie production.” Then, the organization called on its two bakers, Little Brownie Bakers and Weston Foods, to launch their own investigations into these claims and ensure that only sustainably sourced palm oil is used in the production of the popular cookies. Join them in this call-to-action. Demand that child labor be eliminated from the Girl Scout cookie supply chain.

Dear Mr. Mongeau,

A new report from the Associated Press indicates that tens of thousands of child laborers are used in the Girl Scout cookie supply chain. These children, born onto palm oil plantations, are subjected to horrific torture and abuse. They’re denied basic rights and live in constant fear. This reality is in stark contrast to the image Girl Scouts of the USA attempts to convey.

I join the Girl Scouts organization in demanding that you launch an investigation into your own supply chain. Ensure that no child labor is used in the sourcing or production of Girl Scout cookies and commit to only using sustainably sourced palm oil in your baking.
