Don’t Let Pipeline Deliver COVID-19 to Vulnerable Communities

Target: Timothy Walz, Governor of Minnesota

Goal: Halt pipeline construction that could harm the environment and the public health of local communities.

A controversial oil pipeline that already poses a threat to environmental and public health is adding a whole new level of danger: a potential COVID-19 outbreak. The Enbridge Energy Line’s under-construction pipeline is set to run from Canada across the state of Minnesota. The risks to water, land, wildlife, and people from such projects are well-documented, and this effort is no different. Environmentalists and Native American advocates have been fighting against the pipeline. They have recently been joined in greater numbers by medical professionals who worry about COVID-19 community spread in regions already battered by the illness.

Over 4,000 workers (a majority from out-of-state) will converge along construction sites for the project. Close-contact gatherings for extended periods of time are exactly the type of situations believed to fuel rampant spread of COVID-19. At least one critical-access rural hospital near the construction site is already at capacity. Employees fear the surge this project could bring would create a cataclysmic crisis for the small communities that depend on this hospital for basic and essential healthcare needs.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Governor Walz,

You have been petitioned plenty about the Enbridge Energy oil pipeline project. Some of these pleas date back years, primarily from environmental advocates and Native Americans worried about the decimation this endeavor may cause to cherished lands and wildlife. The potential public health risks for disadvantaged communities should alone merit serious consideration.

In the midst of a pandemic infecting and killing scores of people across the state every day, your dismissal of concerned citizens can no longer be the status quo. The pipeline will bring thousands of workers into small communities, exponentially increasing the threat of COVID-19 community spread. Due to the unprecedented circumstances afflicting this country, you must work to curtail all threats. Delay this project and use the time to undertake a serious cost-benefit analysis. You may find that the long-term environmental and human costs for this investment are far too high.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
