Save Macadamias from Extinction

Target: Sussan Ley MP, Australia’s Minister for the Environment

Goal: Provide greater protections for threatened macadamia trees and habitats.

One of the world’s most popular nuts is in danger of going extinct if immediate action is not taken. Wild macadamia trees in Australia have experienced anywhere from 60 to 80 percent loss in their numbers. As a result, several versions have landed on endangered species lists.

A potent combination of habitat reduction and generations of cultivation is largely responsible for this downward trend. The rainforests where macadamia trees grow have been destroyed to make room for industrial development. The many cultivated orchards that contain trees have done little to alleviate the problem. In fact, these orchards may be fueling the lack of genetic diversity crucial for the long-term survival of the species.

Sign the petition below to urge the Australian government to step up efforts to save the macadamia before its perilous predicament becomes irreversible.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Ms. Ley,

Australia has recently taken meaningful steps toward protecting the macadamia trees and nuts vital to the livelihood of many. Endangered classifications and partnerships with conservationists are a promising start. Now the commitment must be solidified.

Please make conservation of the remaining rainforests that house these trees a top priority, not only for the macadamia population but for countless other at-risk plants and animals. Promote programs that will expand the genetic diversity of these species and help ensure their longevity. Most of all, please stay vigilant in the fight against climate change that has already ravaged Australia and far beyond.

Sincerely,
