Create Stronger Protections for Endangered Sharks

Target: National Marine Fisheries Service

Goal: To protect dwindling shark populations by implementing stronger domestic regulations in our oceans

Over the past few years, the shark population has experienced significant drops. Despite various species facing endangerment, they are still being overfished which is not helping their population. Sharks are an important part of the ocean’s ecosystem, and their extinction would forever change our waters. These shark killings need to be stopped.

The National Marine Fisheries Service needs to strengthen their efforts of protecting all shark species. There is currently no organized system for monitoring the population of the sharks, and this is why they are easily being killed. As sharks venture out and swim into international waters, the service needs to cooperate with other nations to make sure sharks are protected everywhere. It has become too common to see sharks getting tangled up in fishing traps and discarded like waste. They could be saved after capture or avoided altogether.

If we don’t act to preserve shark populations, several species could very soon become extinct. Sharks will continue to face dramatic population decreases and our ocean’s ecosystem will be forever changed. Sign the petition below to ask the National Marine Fisheries Service to implement stronger domestic regulations and to work with other nations to protect the waters.

Dear National Marine Fisheries Service,

Our oceans are facing the possibility of a severe ecosystem shift. Sharks continue to see severe population drops because of increased overfishing, and there is currently no end to this in sight. They are accidentally caught up in fishing devices and discarded like trash. These kings of the ocean are being treated like unworthy garbage, and we need to stop it.

The population decrease is something that humans can control, in your organization and out on the sea. It is our fault for not being more careful while using fishing devices in the ocean and the sharks are suffering for it. If sharks can be caught up in the traps, then other ocean creatures are sure to become caught as well.

The current rules to prevent shark fishing aren’t working. There needs to be a stronger management system in place so we can control how many sharks are being carelessly killed. Sharks face enough threats while migrating through the sea. Please create stronger regulations and work with other nations to prevent the extinction of our sharks.

  1. The damage humans are doing to the oceans is so great that they could DIE, according to a program I saw on TV! If they die, then WE will die from the stinking, rotten mess they will become! THIS WOULD SERVE US RIGHT, BUT IT WOULDN’T SERVE NATURE RIGHT! What are ocean species supposed to eat, if not fish?! We should not eat fish, until the oceans have recovered! I don’t eat fish now, and I ask others not to!
