A proposed copper mine in Arizona which could destroy sacred Native American sites could soon be green-lit despite widespread opposition from the San Carlos Apache tribe. Under a land swap deal proposed in 2014, the Rio Tinto mining corporation would gain access to more than 2,400 acres of land containing sacred and prehistoric sites. However, the swap has apparently been arranged without the consent or input of tribal authorities, who say that sacred religious and cultural sites will be placed under unacceptable risk by the planned Resolution Copper mine.
The surprise announcement of work beginning a full year early has raised concerns that the risk assessment required by law is incomplete and may have been accelerated to circumvent tribal opposition. The latest attack on the sovereignty and religious freedoms of San Carlos Apache Nation comes in the form of a copper mine which could cause irreversible damage to ancient sacred sites. Ignoring the concerns of activists and tribal leadership, the Rio Tinto Group has advanced the Resolution Copper scheme by a full year, allegedly to take ownership of land in the Tonto National Forest before the plan can be questioned further or stopped.
However, there is still time. According to the terms of the land swap agreement, Rio Tinto must wait 60 days following the publication of their report to begin mining. It’s crucial that you take advantage of this window during your first weeks in office to halt this unfair scheme and send a signal to Native Americans that their rights, concerns, and freedoms will be respected under your administration. I urge you to take action at the first opportunity to put an end to this disrespectful plan.
