End Unfair Sex Examinations Which Violate Athletes’ Privacy and Dignity

Target: Sebastian Coe, President of World Athletics

Goal: Halt violations of women’s rights through prejudicial and sexist examinations.

For decades, a top athletics governing body has subjected female athletes from dozens of countries to unfair and invasive testing and surgical operations, hindering and even destroying careers in the process. World Athletics, formerly the International Association of Athletics Federations, has maintained abusive standards based on gender stereotypes for female athletes for decades as the leading authority for track and field events. As part of its testing policies, almost exclusively targeting women from countries in Africa, Asia, and South America, it has required that urine and blood samples be given and medical investigations undertaken to verify athletes’ genders. In a particularly tragic case, one Ugandan runner was forced to undergo an operation to remove undiscovered sex organs inside of her body without her informed consent.

Numerous international bodies and experts have criticized World Athletics’ discrimination against female athletes for having high testosterone levels, despite no similar requirements being set for men. Despite extensive evidence that these testing policies have no sound legal, ethical, or medical basis, sporting authorities continue to subject women’s bodies to public scrutiny and to determine their suitability as athletes based on prejudicial and outdated ideas of sex and gender. Sign the petition below to demand that these cruel practices be discontinued immediately.

Dear Mr. Coe,

The testing of female athletes from the Global South to determine their suitability for women’s events is a grotesque injustice. Unlike men or athletes from North America or Europe, women’s athletic careers can be destroyed simply for having differences of sex development or even failing to meet absurd standards of femininity. The invasion of female athletes’ individual privacy and rights has no place in modern competitions. I demand that you end this cruel practice and cease this apparent violation of women’s rights.
