Stop Killing Wild Ducks by Feeding Them Bread

Target: Jason Nixon, Alberta Minister of Environment and Parks

Goal: Protect wild ducks from the unhealthy and potentially fatal practice of feeding bread.

Wild ducks are suffering from being fed bread. The general population thinks they are helping to feed a wild animal, but throwing bread or crackers into a local duck pond causes serious issues for the ducks and the environment. The wild duck population has drastically declined in the last 50 years, and we must do whatever we can to help these disappearing animals.

A duck’s natural diet consists of small fish, insects and other invertebrates, amphibians, seeds, and plants. Bread is an extremely unnatural food that has very little nutritional content, which causes many health issues. Ducks that are fed too much bread become malnourished, aggressive toward each other, and too obese to fly. This man-made food source also causes overpopulation in small areas. A carbohydrate-rich diet is also the cause of aspergillosis, a fatal lung infection that is highly contagious among birds. Reliance on human intervention causes ducks to lose their natural behavior and become incapable of fending for themselves. They also lose their natural fear of people, which causes safety concerns for both people and animals.

There are also significant environmental impacts of feeding bread to ducks. The consumption of carbohydrates causes increased defecation, which leads to an over-concentration of disease-bearing bacteria. Uneaten bread attracts unwanted pests and produces excessive algae blooms.

It is time to educate the populace of the damaging and fatal results of this harmful act. Sign this petition to demand that the government speak out against and implement rules to stop this detrimental practice.

Dear Minister Nixon,

The wild duck population in Alberta has decreased by over 4 million birds in the last 50 years. While there are many factors at work, feeding bread to ducks has a significant negative impact on the ducks, their health, and the environments they inhabit.

A duck’s natural diet consists of fish, bugs, amphibians, and plant matter. This nutrient-rich diet is undermined by feeding them carbohydrate junk food: bread. Eating too much bread causes malnourishment, aggression, loss of natural instincts, difficulty flying, overcrowding, and increased disease. Not to mention the environmental impacts of unwanted algae growth, and the attraction of unwanted pests resulting in an unbalanced ecosystem.

I urge you to educate people of the dangers of this harmful practice and stop the feeding of bread to wild ducks.
