Don’t Threaten Critically Endangered Orangutans with Hydroelectric Dam

Target: Airlangga Hartarto, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs of Indonesia

Goal: Cancel hydroelectric scheme which poses unacceptable threat to endangered species.

Besieged populations of the Tapanuli orangutan, the most recently discovered great ape species, could be doomed by the construction of a hydroelectric dam in Indonesia’s North Sumatra Province. With numbers estimated to be only about 800 individuals in the wild, the Tapanuli orangutan was known to be critically endangered from the moment of its discovery in 2017. Nonetheless, work on the Batang Toru hydropower project has gone ahead despite widespread concern from scientists that the project will destroy the orangutans’ habitats and fragment their population.

The area is home to numerous other threatened species, including the Sumatran tiger, the better-known Sumatran orangutan, and the Sunda pangolin. While renewable energy is vital for the people of Indonesia, it cannot come at the expense of the survival of precious lives. Sign the petition below to demand that the Batang Toru dam be cancelled to prevent irreversible destruction to orangutans and other species.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Minister Airlangga,

The Tapanuli orangutan is the eighth species of great ape to be discovered, and already the impact of human activity on its survival has placed it in a perilous situation. Critically endangered from the moment of its discovery, this species is at grave risk of irreversible destruction if construction of the Batang Toru hydroelectric dam is allowed to go ahead.

Despite the concerns of multiple conservation groups, including the International Union for Conservation of Nature, the survival of this species and several others is now in serious doubt. I demand that you rescind permission for this harmful project and explore less destructive alternatives.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]

This type of dam is an old, dated idea!
Embrace the future – go solar for maximum independence!
