Stop Punishing Parents for Homeschooling Their Children

Target: Anja Karliczek, Federal Minister of Education and Research, Germany

Goal: Allow all citizens the right to choose the best education method for their children.

In Germany and other parts of the European Union, homeschooling is illegal and has been since 1919. All parents should have the right to choose what is best for their children, and this includes deciding the educational approach that best suits their child’s needs. It is time to change this outdated way of thinking and give freedom of choice to all citizens.

In the early 1900s, German officials did not want homeschooled children of poor families to be sent to work instead of school. They also wanted to encourage the mixing of the upper and lower class in one school setting. This outmoded way of thinking is over a hundred years old, and it is time to bring these philosophies of schooling into the 21st century. Countries around the world have allowed homeschooling as a viable and beneficial option of accredited education.

The German government needs to acknowledge that families have the right to make the best decisions for their child’s needs and not face legal consequences for their choices. Sign this petition to allow all families the right to a choice in their education.

Dear Minister Karliczek,

Governments around the world allow homeschooling as an option for families and it is appalling that German families who exercise this option can face severe legal consequences. Homeschooling is a viable means of educating today’s youth and this option should be open to parents who feel this is the best choice for their children.

Since homeschooling was banned in 1919, the views toward education have greatly changed and it is necessary for the government to reflect that. As outlined in the European Convention on Human Rights, all people are guaranteed protection of home and family life. Parents have the right to choose what is best for their children and family. As long as the children are being educated and provided care and attention, the government should support these choices.

I urge you to bring these outmoded laws into the 21st century and allow families the right to educational options including homeschooling.
