Target: Diane Rodriguez
Goal: Support Diane Rodriguez, the first transgender woman running for office in South America, and her fight for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights.
South America could soon be electing its first transgender lawmaker. Diane Rodriguez is a transsexual woman from Ecuador who has fought against all odds to become a congressional candidate. Commend her for this accomplishment and support her campaign for gay rights and progressive policies in Ecuador.
Diane Rodriguez has been an outspoken supporter of leftist ideals for years, and stated that “My focus will be on all minorities, vulnerable ethnic groups and feminist causes,” if she is elected as a government official. She would also push for legalization of gay marriage – a subject that has been warily approached by the country’s 85% catholic population. In socially conservative Ecuador, Rodriguez would be a strong and appreciable voice for LGBT rights.
Now a 30-year-old transgender psychology student, Rodriguez has faced no shortage of adversity in her path to becoming a member of Congress. After coming out to her parents as a teenager, she was thrown out of the house and had to survive briefly as a prostitute before being allowed back home. Since then she has seen discrimination in her personal, work, and political lives because of her increasingly feminine appearance. Able to change her name from Luis Benedicto to Diane Rodriguez only after a legal battle, she is still not allowed an identification card indicating her as a female. For this reason she has for some years been running a campaign for the individual’s right to identify as the gender of their choosing.
Rodriguez’s achievements are an example to admire in the international struggle for LGBT justice and women’s rights. Though more and more countries are shedding their conservative skins, others are holding on tight to traditional values that breed discrimination and constrict our changing world. Congratulate Diane Rodriguez for her congressional candidacy, and celebrate a victory in this ongoing fight.
Dear Diane Rodriguez,
It is with great joy that I congratulate you on your recent congressional candidacy. As South America’s first potential lawmaker, you stand to the world as an example of progress in the struggle for LGBT and women’s rights. Because of this alone, your struggles with discrimination will not be borne by future transsexuals and your campaigns with Silueta X will be impactful.
Ecuador is a conservative country that will benefit greatly from a strong leftist voice like yours. Your goals and the efforts of Rupture 25 can lead it to a brighter, more progressive future. You have my support in the upcoming election, and my congratulations on your being a candidate for Ecuadorian congress.
