Target: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada
Goal: Call out Saudi Arabia on the international stage for violent human rights abuses.
A women’s rights activist has been jailed in Saudi Arabia for over two years. She’s been subjected to torture, sexual assault, solitary confinement, and more atrocities. With Saudi Arabia taking to the international stage at this year’s virtual G20 Summit, it is time for world leaders to call out the nation’s mistreatment.
Loujain Alhathloul graduated from the University of British Columbia before returning to her home country of Saudi Arabia. In 2018, she was arrested with nine other women’s rights activists and charged with communicating with foreign journalists. While behind bars, she’s been electrocuted, flogged, and sexually assaulted. She’s since embarked on a hunger strike while she awaits her trial, which has been placed on hold indefinitely.
This is not the first human rights atrocity aimed at a human rights activist. Saudi Arabia has murdered and arrested thousands of men and women just like Alhathloul. Now, global leaders have the opportunity to demand her release and call for an end to such mistreatment. Ask Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, PM of the nation where Alhathloul studied, to be the first to do so.
PETITION LETTER:
Dear Prime Minister Trudeau,
Loujain Alhathloul called your nation home for over five years. She earned her degree and then returned to Saudi Arabia with the hopes of improving women’s rights across the country. However, she was arrested and charged with communicating with foreign journalists. She’s been held behind bars for over two years and subjected to mental, physical, and sexual abuse.
As you participate in the G20 Summit hosted by Saudi Arabia, I demand that you call out the country’s abuses. Demand Alhathloul’s release. Use your international stage to defend human rights.
Sincerely,
[Your Name Here]
