Limit the Spread of Election Disinformation on Social Media

Target: Mark Zuckerberg, Chief Executive Officer, Facebook Inc.

Goal: Prevent spread of dubious or false information to allow accurate election results to be recorded.

In many ways, the United States’ 2020 election is unprecedented. Chief among these ways is the challenge faced by election officials in arriving at an accurate count of votes as more than 100 million people voted early or by mail. In states such as Pennsylvania or North Carolina, officials have been granted crucial extra time to ensure votes are counted correctly and fairly.

However, many public figures including President Donald Trump and former senator Rick Santorum have made unsubstantiated and dangerous claims of election fraud. In order to allow election boards to continue their work free of interference, it is critical to prevent the spread of mistaken information and outright lies on social media, especially Facebook, the world’s largest social media platform by a considerable margin. Sign the petition below to demand that Facebook do its part to ensure the democratic process is protected.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Zuckerberg,

The risk of disinformation being spread through your platform is greater than ever due to the high tensions and uncertainty surrounding the 2020 United States election. During an unusually long vote counting period, election officials are relying on extra time and public calm to ensure their work is carried out successfully.

However, many individuals public and private have disrupted, inadvertently or otherwise, the sharing of accurate information as the votes are tallied. I urge you to do your part to fight this trend by being vigilant in preventing the spread of dangerous inaccuracies and falsehoods on your platform.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
