Stop Attacking Native American Environmental Sovereignty

Target: Kevin Stitt, Governor of Oklahoma

Goal: End attacks on hard-won rights of Native Americans to protect themselves from environmental damage.

At the urging of governor Kevin Stitt, the United States Environmental Protection Agency has granted oil and gas producers the right to dump dangerous chemical waste on tribal lands. A July Supreme Court ruling expanded tribal governments’ powers over reservation territory, strengthening efforts to reduce pollution and carbon dependency among tribal citizens. However, Governor Stitt, long hostile to Native groups, circumvented the ruling by asking the EPA to grant him powers over regulatory controls statewide, undermining a landmark case in tribal relations.

Now, practices such as fracking and wastewater injection, previously banned by tribal leaders, will be allowed without their consent in a clear violation of their legal rights. By attacking tribal sovereignty and granting oil and gas producers the right to indiscriminately pollute Native communities, Stitt and the EPA have failed in their duty to protect and serve the people who rely on them. Sign the petition below to demand that Kevin Stitt ceases his assault on tribal governments.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Governor Stitt,

The sovereignty granted to dozens of tribes in Oklahoma was a sign that groups which have suffered for centuries at the hands of the United States might finally have regained the self-determination all Americans are meant to enjoy. With this new recognition, tribal leaders had ambitious plans to protect the homes of their citizens and to fight pollution and climate change through admirable regulations.

Your sabotage of tribal governments’ powers to determine their own environmental policies is nothing short of a cowardly attempt to benefit energy companies’ interests over the lives of residents of your state. I demand that you cease your efforts to undermine Native American sovereignty and work with tribal governments to protect the environment and human lives.

Sincerely,
