Target: United Kingdom Prime Minister David Cameron and the House of Commons
Goal: Thank United Kingdom Prime Minster Cameron and United Kingdom lawmakers for taking a step in equal marriage rights
Recently, United Kingdom legislators took a step toward equal rights and pushed a bill forward legalizing same-sex marriage. While the bill is still facing another vote in the House of Commons and a vote in the House of Lords, gay and straight UK citizens support this as a giant positive step for gay rights. Applaud UK government leaders for this important step.
UK Members of Parliament have been quoted stating that opening marriage up to same-sex unions would strengthen, not weaken, the institution. It is likely the vote will pass despite needing several more votes in each House. Despite Prime Minister Cameron’s Conservative party alliance he has said simply that supporting gay-marriage is supporting marriage, an issue important to the Conservative party’s ideals.
While the arguably more conservative UK moves forward with a 400-175 vote in favor of equal marriage rights, the US has been extremely slow at coming to a decision. Though slowly edging forward with the volatile issue of legalizing American same-sex marriage, there are only nine states that currently allow same-sex marriage. Maine, Maryland and Washington are recent additions and the first states to legalize same-sex marriage through a popular vote. Slowly the US will shift away from its conservative Puritan upbringing and hopefully soon, following UK example, every American can have the right to marry his or her loved one. For now, thank the UK for progressive thinking and equality.
Sign the petition below and thank UK lawmakers for approving a bill to legalize same-sex marriage and urge them to continue to push it forward to become law.
Dear Prime Minister Cameron and UK Members of Parliament,
Recently you have taken a positive step toward equality by voting for legalizing same-sex marriage. I am writing to thank you for these efforts and urge you to continue to push same-sex marriage into law. Only nine US states have legalized same-sex marriage but I hope with the UK’s example the US will soon follow in the same footsteps.
As Prime Minister Cameron said, supporting gay marriage is to support marriage. Marriage is a legal arrangement, a contract and a symbol. There are many legal advantages to being married, advantages that many are denied simply because of his or her sexual orientation. There is also a symbolic advantage that marriage provides in the form of love, support, and family that gay men and women have been denied for too long. Gay rights issues are human rights issues and the UK has positively addressed this violation of human rights by voting forward to legalize same-sex marriage.
Before the bill can become law there are several votes still required. I urge you to continue to stand up for human rights and the rights of UK citizens and ensure this bill passes through to law.
